Kahiki Supper Club Book In Stock!

kahikibookInspired by Florida’s famed Mai-Kai restaurant, Bill Sapp and Lee Henry opened the Kahiki Supper Club in 1961. They set out simply to build a nice Polynesian restaurant and ended up establishing the most magnificent one of them all. For nearly forty years, the Kahiki was the undisputed center of tiki culture.

“Kahiki Supper Club – A Polynesian paradise in Columbus” is a 160 page book written and compiled by David Meyers, Elise Meyers Walker, Jeff Chenault and Doub Motz collects stories and images, telling the history of the legendary tiki temple!

Our copies of this book are signed by exotica music expert and Beachcomber Trio LP producer Jeff Chenault. Limited stock!

ALL THREE AVAILABLE FROM DIONYSUS MAIL ORDER – Links to each LP at the end of each description.

The Beachcomber Trio “Live at Kahiki 1965” limited blue vinyl repress
Previously unreleased until 2010, this long-awaited LP is a live recording of the house band at the legendary Kahiki restaurant. It’s like you are sitting at the bar enjoying a Mai Tai while listening to Marsh Padilla and company play a set of Latin Jazz/Hawaiian/Lounge inspired exotica! First pressing of 500 on black vinyl sold out shortly after release. This is a limited re-pressing of 485 copies on blue vinyl! Purchase here

The Avengers VI “Real Cool Hits” limited white vinyl repress
The Avengers VI were a clean-cut surf band from Anaheim, Calif., whose one and only album, Real Cool Hits, was issued in 1966 as a promo for Good Humor ice cream. The group’s name wasn’t even mentioned on the original cover although it was pictured on the kick drum. The group’s repertoire, which encompassed covers of popular surf instrumentals, mood music, movie themes and some first rate originals, attracted both teens and adults to their appearances in southern California. The long-out of print Bacchus Archives vinyl reissue has itself become collectible, bringing prices of $30 and up, which is why we’ve decided to repress this gem, in an edition of 500 on white vinyl! Purchase here

The Surf Teens “Surf Mania” limited clear vinyl repress
A reissue of the fantastic, but hopelessly rare 1963 album by  Central Californian teens under the guidance of The Revels’ Norman Knowles. Includes five previously unreleased tracks and takes from master tapes and one from a rare 45! The Bacchus Archives LP has been out of print for a number of years. This is a clear vinyl repress in an edition of 500! Purchase here

Tonga Hut brings to Palm Springs a classic American mid-century Polynesian themed restaurant / bar in a tiki-modern setting, with full appetizer, dinner and cocktail menus.

Tonga Hut Palm Springs is the offspring of the Tonga Hut North Hollywood, Opening its’ doors in 1958 during the heyday of tiki culture in Southern California, Tonga Hut is the oldest surviving tiki bar in Los Angeles.

Tonga Hut Palm Springs has been lovingly decorated by artist Tiki Diablo and Chase Marshall (Beauty Bar in L.A. and Cobra Lounge in NYC) with vintage items as well as contemporary contributions from many artists in the tiki community including Leroy Schmaltz from Oceanic Arts, Eric October, Bosko, Kirby, Nelson’s Tiki Hut and “Mad Dog” Mike Gilbert.

Tonga Hut’s menu offers classic Polynesian/Cantonese/American dishes, like you might have found at Don the Beachcomber on old Palm Canyon Drive in the Rat Pack era. The cocktail menu contains more than 40 drinks including classic cocktails, classic tiki drinks as well as numerous original drinks including some that are exclusive to the Palm Springs location.

DJ Lee Joseph heads up the “independent underground” label Dionysus Records, which has specialized in the retro sounds of surf, exotica, garage rock, rockabilly and psychedelia since the mid ‘80s, and has a weekly show called “Over Under Sideways Down” on the mid-century centric LuxuriaMusic.com internet radio station. He has held numerous club residences in Los Angeles, and DJs at the yearly Tiki Oasis event in San Diego. “DJ Lee” brings to Tonga Hut Palm Springs a deep knowledge and collection of era appropriate music from lounge and exotica to French Ye Ye, surf to soul and other “swinging” sounds from the 1950s -1970s, on vinyl of course!
