New Dionysus Releases by Jerry Sun and Creepxotica!

These new Dionysus releases will be available in advance of street date at Surf Guitar 101, Tiki Oasis 11 and the Dionysus Records cart

Creepxotica four-song 7″
Creepxotica: {Kreep-za-ti-ka}, noun or adjective; having or causing a creeping sensation of the skin, as from horror or fear combined with the relaxing exotic sounds of the South-Pacific. Creepxotica takes you on an exotic ride through time to the sun bleached sands of the Mexican Riviera, and to the cool ocean waters of the Polynesian Islands. The soothing sounds of the vibes will calm your savage soul, while the reverberating guitar will hearken a time of lazy Saturday afternoons. The percussive musings will melt your inhibitions, as low, melodious, bass driven tones will cool your head. So sit back and relax as you embark on a Tiki paradise with the new lounge sensation from Dionysus Records, Creepxotica!

(Shhh – don’t tell anyone that Creepxotica is actually garage punk surf pranksters – The Creepy Creeps. This limited edition four-song red vinyl 7″ comes with a digital download code – it’s got a big hole too! Click to purchase

The Exotic Sounds of Jerry Sun LP
Numbered edition of 500, red vinyl LP with digital download code
We’ve exotica expert Jeff Chenault to thank for this one!  Avid listeners of Exotica music will undoubtedly be familiar with the primitive sounds of Les Baxter, Martin Denny, Arthur Lyman and Robert Drasnin but very few people today have ever heard of Jerry Sun, a professional vibe player whose versatility and unique blending of jazz and tropical melodies would often compare him to Arthur Lyman. Jerry was a big fan of Denny, and Lyman and would often visit them while in Hawaii or when they would tour stateside.  While Exotica was his forte, his biggest influence would come from the Latin-Jazz sound of Cal Tjader. Click to purchase

This album was recorded in 1962 at Audio Recording studios by famous Northwest recording engineer Kearney Barton who recorded The Sonics, The Wailers and The Kingsmen (the hit version of “Louie Louie”.)  Somehow five reels of Jerry’s music ended up in the hands of record store in Tacoma. This album is one of those tapes, unreleased until now! These recordings have been transferred and edited entirely in the ANALOG realm – no digital processing was used in the preparation or cutting of this record.

The Preachers vinyl 12″ repressed and a performance on “Shivaree”

In 2002, Bacchus Archives relased a 12″vinyl slab and CD  consisting of the eight known recordings by Los Angeles ’60s garage legends, The Preachers, known best for their OVER THE TOP version of “Who Do You Love” which was originally unearthed on an early Pebbles compilation.  Only 500 copies of the 12″ were pressed which sold out a few years ago. We’ve finally repressed this LOUD slab of garage goodness, which also has photos and an excellent interview with Preacher’s keyboardist Rudy Garza on the back cover. Order the vinyl here or order the CD here – and enjoy this amazing video of The Preachers live on the Shivaree show in 1965!

Geza X LP repressed w/ digital coupon – Geza on New Wave Theater

The Bacchus Archives reissue of Geza X’s “You Goddam Kids” has been out of print for almost two years – the album has been repressed in an edition of 500 on yellow vinyl and includes a digital download coupon! Click here to order the record.

Geza X has been an important fixture on the California punk/new wave scene for many years as a producer/writer/engineer for countless artists, from Josie Cotton to the Dead Kennedys. As an artist, however, he doesn’t resemble most of those he’s worked with at all: You Goddamn Kids! is delightful, off-the-wall, adventurous, complex and humorous. The studio pro uses sound effects and treated vocals to enhance his music, much of which might well appeal to fans of, say, the Residents. – Charles P. Lamey – Trouser Press

This classic post Masque-era  album is the unique work of former Deadbeats, Mommymen member and producer GEZA X with quite the cast of original Los Angeles punk scene luminaries as contributing musicians including Brendan Mullen, Paul Roessler, D.J. Bonebrake, Josie Cotton, Don Bolles and others! Utilizing the unique “Gezatone” guitar with a screechy vocal style and warped sense of humor, this album delivers early ‘80s classics such as “We Need More Power” and “Isotope Soap” as heard on the “Let Them Eat Jellybeans” and “Rodney On The Roq” compilations.

Tracks: Pony Ride II, Rio Grande Hotel, Hungarian, We Need More Power, Isotope Soap, The Paranoids Are Coming, Interlude, Funky Monsters, Practicing Mice, I Hate Punks, Mean Mr. Mommy Man and the bonus tracks RX Rock & Roll and Pony Ride I

The Visual and Aural Dreamscapes of Kelly Haigh

Kelly Haigh “9PM”,  24×24, acrylic on canvas,  at the “Summertime Show” at El Kartel in Vancouver.

Kelly Haigh lives, paints, and cuts hair in Vancouver, where she also sings and plays in the band, Ashley Park. She is currently obsessed with Victorian Taxidermy, and plans on turning her tiny hair salon into her own private natural history museum. There is a story on Kelly’s website, which speaks of her stuffed crow, whom she’s named Jack T. Crow, and how he takes her on his back to some magical, yet sometimes terrifying places, and how he has her paint all the scenes they witness together in that surreal landscape of dreams.

Country Western Star starring Kelly Haigh with Francis the singing dog CD

Kelly Haigh has created an album of surreal dreamscapes and opens the gates to a universe you exist in momentary somewhere between consciousness and dreams as you are drifting away to sleep. “Country Western Star” is an auditory equivalent of her paintings and encompasses numerous elements of pop and surrealism, cuteness, terror, beauty and fear, in a cloud covered atmosphere with stories rooted on this planet but somehow not of this earth.

The intro to the liner notes tell the story well and go like this:

“Country Western Star walks in the shadowlands, singing her songs to the critters of the forest and tending to the vast gardens filled with unmarked graves. She is the keeper of justice, guided by her trusted compass, which is not marked with the usual North, South, East or West but instead bears the letters L.M.F. & R. LOVE, MURDER, FORGIVNESS, REVENGE”

“Country Western Star starring Kelly Haigh with Frances the singing dog” is a package to behold; from Kelly’s art which adorns the cover, the eight-panel fold-out insert, the six-panel fold-out CD jacket and the music itself featuring 25 surreal musical stories.

Jeff Chenault brings you The Beachcomber Trio at The Kahiki 1965

The Beachcomber Trio “Live at the Kahiki 1965”

Bacchus Archives BA11109
LP only, hand-numbered edition of 500 with digital download coupon included. Click here to order.

Experience an exotic evening at the famous Kahiki Supper Club, a legendary and now defunct “Tiki Temple” in Columbus Ohio with The Beachcomber Trio, the house band who filled the restaurant’s Music Bar with a unique Latin Jazz/Hawaiian/Lounge hybrid. Like many restaurant albums released in the ‘60s, this recording brings back the excitement of a small live audience with cocktails in hand and even includes the sound of the bar’s waterfall adding to the unique environmental experience. Listen now to the sound of a night out inside of the greatest Polynesian restaurants in the world.  This previously unreleased tape was for years in the possession of trio leader Marsh Padilla and recently presented to exotica musicologist Jeff Chenault who put the release together for Bacchus Archives. This is a strictly limited edition of 500 on vinyl LP which comes with a digital download code. The mastering and cutting was done strictly in the analog realm by our pal Len Horowitz at HRS (History of Recorded Sound) in Culver City, CA.
