Blackeyed Soul Club

The Blackeyed Soul Club is a fun underground Sixties Soul / Rock ‘n’ roll club based at The Satellite. Run by DJ’s Jason Pandora and Howie Pyro who are looking for a way to give Los Angeles the kind of club where Mods, Rockers and anyone with an ear for good music and sharp style can come and DANCE to the obscure, great and downright delicious vinyl monsters that have been lighting up dance floors, and leading the way for DJ’s all over the globe.

The records played range from the late 50s greasy RnB, to the Storming Soul of the 60s, to US Garage and British Beat. Tunes that slipped through the cracks the first time around, that are being resurrected by the most discerning. The club values itself on assembling a DJ roster with one thing in mind – the dance floor. Alongside the rare records that never made it, you’re likely to hear someone dropping those heavy Motown sides that you know and love. The difference is, in this mix all these tunes sound as relevant as the day they were first released.

The Blackeyed Soul Club is a place for vinyl purists, it’s a place for Mods, Rockabilly kids, Indie types but most of all it is for those who want to come, dance, and party without being patronized or intimidated by the usual ‘sixties’ scenes. It’s for anybody and everybody.

10/15: Alice Bag and Dawn Wirth sign books at La Luz de Jesus

Punk Pioneers Alice Bag and Dawn Wirth double book signing party

October 15, 2011, 7pm – 10pm
La Luz de Jesus Gallery

4633 Hollywood Blvd.
Los Angeles CA 90027

323-666-7667

info@laluzdejesus.com

La Luz de Jesus Gallery presents Los Angeles punk rock pioneers Alice Bag’s “Violence Girl” and Dawn Wirth’s The Bags – Hollywood Forever” double book release and signing party.

Alice Bag will be reading from her new book and performing two songs on acoustic guitar, accompanied by Lee Joseph on acoustic bass. Dawn Wirth’s delicious home cooked Alice Bag Peanut Butter Brownies (packaged in brown paper Bags) will be given to the first 25 people who buy both books at the event.

Alice Bag “Violence Girl”
Alice Bag was there at the origins of L.A. punk, at the famed Masque and Whisky-a-Go-Go, hanging out with Darby Crash and the Go-Gos. But she started as Alicia
Armendariz and English was her second language. She knew Mariachis better than rock music. A certain violence was passed on to her from her Mexican-American father. The proximity of the East L.A. barrio to Hollywood is as close as a short drive on the 101 freeway, but the cultural divide is enormous. Born to Mexican-born and American-naturalized parents, Alicia Armendariz migrated a few miles west to participate in the free-range birth of the 1970s punk  movement. Alicia adopted the punk name Alice Bag, and became lead singer for early punk visionaries The Bags, and her Alice Bag Band was featured in Penelope Spheeris’  documentary The Decline of Western Civilization.

Here is a life of many crossed boundaries, from East L.A.’s musica ranchera  to Hollywood’s punk rock; from a violent male-dominated family to female-dominated transgressive rock bands.

Violence Girl takes us from a violent upbringing to an aggressive punk  sensibility; this time a difficult coming-of-age memoir culminates with a  satisfying conclusion, complete with a happy marriage and children. Nearly a hundred never before published photographs energize the text in remarkable  ways.

Alice Bag’s work and influence can be seen this year in the traveling  Smithsonian exhibition “American Sabor: Latinos in U.S. Popular Music.” “Violence Girl is published by Feral House  www.feralhouse.com www.alicebag.com/violencegirl.html

Dawn Wirth “The Bags – Hollywood Forever”
Dawn Wirth is one of the few to document the “first wave” of the Los Angeles Punk Rock scene. Her initial work for various fanzines such as Flipside, Sniffin’ Glue, Gen X and White Stuff as well as the fliers she created for unsigned local bands and fanclubs helped establish the visual esthetic of American Punk.  The first book in the L.A. punk series, The Bags-Hollywood Forever unearths never before seen photos of The Bags early line-up, with only 36 exposures, Dawn makes every shot count – intimate shots of a band that would change the sound of rock for generations to come.
“The Bags – Hollywood Forever” – self published

“Dawn Wirth’s verite images are essential to any understanding of first wave Los Angeles punk rock 1977-79…”– Brendan Mullen, founder of the Masque

“Sometimes pictures speak louder than words and in 1977 during the early days of L.A. punk rock, Dawn Wirth was on the front lines, camera in hand, capturing the moment with terrific photographs.”– John Denny, lead singer for The Weridos

La Luz de Jesus Gallery’s 25, Mark Todd, and more!
La Luz de Jesus Gallery will be featuring a new museum work from Wayne Martin Belger as part of the upcoming two-part exhibition and book, “La Luz de Jesus 25“, a celebration of the gallery’s 25th anniversary milestone opening in October and November. Also featured is a much requested encore of Mark Todd’s  “Power Fury Fireworks Shack ” installation -a 3:4 scale shack built from scratch and filledmwith hand-painted firework sculptures constructed in Todd’s distinct style (Note: these are sculptures and are not live fireworks!), along with encore presentations from Mark Gleason, Lyle Motley and Van Saro. La Luz de Jesus will also be featuring a rare screen print poster from their first show, 25 years ago by Daniel “DX” Segura. New works from Kristopher Sapp and Alex Manukyan will offer a special preview of the 2012 calendar, with other surprises  in store that are sure to delight attendees of all ages.

“Creator / Spectator”
Presented by Thinkspace and curated by Euth

Thinkspace is pleased to present “Creator / Spectator,” an exhibition curated by local artist Euth, featuring some of the most exciting names currently gracing the streets of Los Angeles with their work. The artists chosen to participate represent the outside circle of underground art in Los Angeles. These are individuals exploring concepts deeply rooted in their own personal history and that are not looking to follow in the footsteps of those who came before them. Each artist was selected because their work is not simply about a name and a product, but more so about who he or she is as a individual – this is not a group working towards a common title or theme like “street art” but instead a group of individuals who have found common ground in a medium that promotes the individuality of each component explored.

This exhibit looks to explore beyond the mentality that the medium is the message. This is about a path of life chosen by these artists that constitutes the very nature of who they are. Each artist involved in this show offers something unique to the city of Los Angeles, a personal message to which they are both creator and spectator.

Featuring works from:
Cat Cult, Corrina Corina, CRYPTIK, Duart JDI, Euth, Line Line Dot, NOMADE, Smog City

Sketch Theater Video Screenings

Mark Todd
continues his process of reinterpreting, deconstructing and adopting classic iconic comic imagery in his July 2011 La Luz de Jesus Gallery show, “Force Field”. The works reference snippets of abstracted comics and combine many covers and characters, melding them together in mixed media paintings and layered collage works, producing rich layers of oozing, fragmented and multiple plains. Anchoring the show will be a large dimensional centerpiece installation – a ¾ scale comics inspired fireworks stand composed of wood, chicken wire, lights and flags with painted surfaces.

Todd took his first creative cues from comic books, role playing games and Star Wars: worlds of inventive fantasy that still inform his work today. For the last six years he has categorically documented the world of his teenage obsession, intense scrutiny and alteration of classic comic covers from “Fantastic Four,” “X-Men,” “Iron Man,” “Spiderman” and other series, including the work of legendary illustrators like Jack Kirby. “I love the type, the heavy shadows, the colors and the way they seemed to use very inch of the page,” says Todd. “I sit and study them, and my brush reconstructs them.” Todd is referencing the past, waxing nostalgic about it and simultaneously lending his own post-modern sensibility to it, employing a limited palette, repetition, distortion and mixed media materials including spray paint, cel-vinyl, glossy varnishes, silkscreen and dusty stains. The pieces appear as prized objects; tablets encoded with civilization’s most iconic collective wisdom. Todd recently put up PowerFury.com, a new website and blog dedicated to his artwork www.powerfury.com

Rafa’s is a well kept secret, right in the middle of Echo Park – the beautiful  but small hand-built gallery shows sculpture and paintings, and also boasts a small stage with a intimate living-room vibe.

Historian, music fan, guitarist, singer, songwriter Skip Heller has researched and produced records with the likes of Les Baxter, Robert Drasnin, Sammy Masters, has played with legends such as Yma Sumac, has written and produced music for The Flinstones and Dexter’s Laboratory, among many other things. His current group, The Skip Heller Trio, provides Heller with a vehicle to play and sing his songs which are as inspired by great American songwriters of the Brill Building era as they are Americana roots, country and rockabilly. The Trio performs covers such as Jimmy Skinner’s “Doin’ My Time” which showcase Heller’s ability to really smoke on lead – played on an acoustic guitar. Backed by Dionysus Records’ head honcho Lee Joseph on bass and Mark Borinstein on drums, the combo also has the ability to whip out cover tunes they’ve never played before and make them sound like they’ve rehearsed them!

The Dick and Jane Family Orchestra were formerly known as Dick and Jane, a husband-wife duo featuring Richard Ross and one of Los Angeles original “100 punks,” filmmaker and producer Jane Cantillon who has worked with the likes of Tyra, Hard Copy, Howie Mandell and many others.  When Lee Joseph was approaching the end of his almost decade long DJ residencies, he was invited  to see a screening of Cantillon’s “The Other Side” documentary. The duo performed and Joseph told them that that they could use a bassist. After dusting off an instrument he pretty much put down in 2000, Joseph joined the duo in February of 2010. Shortly after, Michael Peffer, drummer of Biblical Proof of UFOs joined the threesome as their percussionist and the group became The Dick and Jane Family Orchestra (with Joseph and D&J’s “fake” son and Pefffer as their “fake” nephiew.) The group plays a hybrid of beat, folk and garage with acoustified versions of Velvet Underground, Question Mark and The Mysterians and Jimi Hendrix, along with Cantillon’s catchy and humorous originals about Los Angeles, the last taboo (smoking)and of course, men.

The two groups will be joined by singer-songwriter Christopher Lockett.

11/4: Dionysus Records presents a night at The Redwood Bar and Grill

Orchestra Superstring features DJ Bonebrake of X on vibes and plays instrumental jazz music inspired by Afro-Cuban, Latin, and other modern influences. Composed of an eclectic band of well known Los Angeles musicians; Orchestra Supersting blends infectious beats and fresh rhythms in original tunes written by its members, and creates new interpretations of jazz standards. Their second album, “Easy,” will be released by Dionysus Records in February of 2011.

The Dick and Jane Family Orchestra featuring Jane Cantillon, Richard Ross, percussionist Mike Peffer (also of Biblical Proof of UFOs) and Dionysus Records’ Lee Joseph on bass plays a hybrid of folk, beat and garage – acoustifying Velvet Underground, feminizing Bob Dylan and featuring frontwoman Cantillon’s extremely infectious and humorous LA-centric originals.

The Skip Heller Trio features long  time Dionysus Records recording artist and friend Skip Heller with Lee Joseph on bass and guest drummer DJ Bonebrake. The trio plays an all-acoustic country, roots and rock ‘n’ roll set showcasing Heller’s songsmithing, vocals and  jazz, country and rockabilly inspired guitar playing.

The night starts at 9:30 and the cover is only $5.00. If you’ve never been to the pirate themed Redwood Bar and Grill, come early and hungry. They have some of the best comfort food, salads and sweet potato fries in Los Angeles!

“An American hero flying below the radar.” — Time Out New York

The Skip Heller Trio — featuring Lee Joseph on bass and Mark Borinstein on drums — once again takes the stage at Rafa’s Gallery, a
tiny and charming venue at Sunset and Glendale in Echo Park. Ostensibly a country band, the trio is also colored by a love for 60s garage rock, Philly soul, exotica, and Roger Miller.  The crack rhythm team of Joesph and Borinstein is a perfect match for Heller’s virtuoso jazz-meets-bluegrass guitar and his soulful baritone.  The great Patria Jacobs opens.

Also worth noting about this show: it’s Heller’s birthday party.
