Istanbul’s Replikas Embrace Antolian Pop ’65-’75

REPLiIKAS debut album Köledoyuran (2000) and second album Dadaruhi (2002) were released by the Ada Music label. The band’s third album, Avaz, was produced by Wharton  Tiers and released in May 2005 by the Doublemoon label. The band recorded their fifth album, Zerre, in a former prison located in the Gökçeada Island, which they converted to a studio. Peyote Music released this album in November  2008.

Alongside releasing albums and playing concerts, REPLiKAS also writes music for films. In 2001 the band composed their first soundtrack  for the movie Maruf by Serdar  Akar. In 2005 the band crerated music for Kutluğ Ataman’s movie titled İki Genç Kız which won them the best film music award by SİYAD in 2006. The soundtracks were collected into an album named  Film Müzikleri which was released by Poztif in October 2006.  The band  took part  in Fatih Akın’s documentary Crossing the Bridge. Pieces from their albums have also been used in various short and feature-length movies.

REPLiKAS have  just released their latest EP on Ada music featuring seven new songs, and a box set which includes the remastered versions of their first two albums, Köledoyuran and Dadaruhi plus EP #1

Commenting on the recent upheaval in Turkey,
the band has released this statement:

We have been experiencing an extremely violent attempt to convert to a more totalitarian regime using all kinds of police forces, including civil gangs provoked by the prime minister himself. The word “more” is deliberately used above because the functionality of democracy in Turkey is a highly debatable topic since the inception of the republic. Open exchange and plurality is the last thing the current government wants because they cannot control the Turkish people in the same authoritarian way. Now the Gezi Park, where the protests began, functions as a symbol, yet this resistance is not solely an environmentalist effort, but an act against the oppressive regime of the prime minister and the ruling party. It is a fight to preserve the culture and history of this society, where people of different origin and belief live with respect to each other’s rights and freedom peacefully.

The majority of the cultural acts are either cancelled or postponed. This movement has evoked a very powerful wave of artistic expression among the people of resistance. People have regained confidence and continue to develop collective wisdom which will be reflected in all forms of art as in music. Many anti-government and anti-violence songs came out during this crack down and we also never give up on writing music independently, encourage and support young musicians on being individuals.

This is the largest and most effective public resistance which took place in Turkey and it still continues. It is hard to predict its long term impacts on our future work, but we believe it would be definitely positive, enlightening and connective, just like the movement itself.

The compilation features tracks by The Bags, The Eyes, The Alleycats, X, Black Randy, and The Germs which were all exclusive to the comp at the time of its’ release.

7/15/13: UPDATE – HERE’S A LINK TO THE SHOW PODCAST!!

OUSD_7_3_13 copy

In the late ’70s, Dangerhouse Records–that most legendary of punk rock labels–released a handful of indispensable 7-inches and two 12-inches: records that everyone knows, worships and collects. One of the 12-inches was Black Randy’s Pass the Dust, I Think I’m Bowie, and the other, released in 1979, was the one-sided, six-song, silkscreened picture EP, Yes LA.

The title was a take-off on the seminal No Wave compilation album released a year earlier, No New York, and the Dangerhouse kids even went so far as to include the disclaimer “Not produced by Brian Eno” on the record. The original was limited to 2,000 copies, every one screened by hand and packaged in a clear bag with a white cardboard backing . Frontier Records (with the help of the meticulous Cliff and company at The Factory) has taken great pains to reproduce every detail of the original, from the ink to the bag and cardboard, right down to custom-cut mylar seals for the flap (check out these photos of the “making-of”). Still, there are a couple of difference, but we’ll let you discover them for yourself.

34 years out-of-print, originals of Yes LA have sold for $250 and up. Now you can get your own copy of this fabled LA punk classic and put the gougers out of business! THREE COLOR VARIATIONS AVAILABLE IN THE DIONYSUS RECORDS CART (orders will ship on July 5).

What A Show! Link For The Pandoras OUSD Podcast LuxuriaMusic

Internet Radio History was made on Wednesday May 15, 2013 when four ex-members of The Pandoras:  Kim Shattuck, Melanie Vammen Buscher, Karen Blankfeld Basset, and Sheri Kaplan Weinstein, joined me on Over Under Sideways Down – LuxuriaMusic.com for two hours of no-holes-barred talk and music! Among the topics of discussion were The Pandoras leader, the late Paula Pierce’s not-too-secret affairs, the reason the band’s Elektra LP was never released, numerous line-up changes and drama as well as plenty of talk about music that inspired the band and of course the music the band played.  There were moments when I was reduced to stuttering and silence! Below is the link for the entire podcast – download and share with your friends! Enjoy the photos and set-list as well!

Blackeyed Soul Club

The Blackeyed Soul Club is a fun underground Sixties Soul / Rock ‘n’ roll club based at The Satellite. Run by DJ’s Jason Pandora and Howie Pyro who are looking for a way to give Los Angeles the kind of club where Mods, Rockers and anyone with an ear for good music and sharp style can come and DANCE to the obscure, great and downright delicious vinyl monsters that have been lighting up dance floors, and leading the way for DJ’s all over the globe.

The records played range from the late 50s greasy RnB, to the Storming Soul of the 60s, to US Garage and British Beat. Tunes that slipped through the cracks the first time around, that are being resurrected by the most discerning. The club values itself on assembling a DJ roster with one thing in mind – the dance floor. Alongside the rare records that never made it, you’re likely to hear someone dropping those heavy Motown sides that you know and love. The difference is, in this mix all these tunes sound as relevant as the day they were first released.

The Blackeyed Soul Club is a place for vinyl purists, it’s a place for Mods, Rockabilly kids, Indie types but most of all it is for those who want to come, dance, and party without being patronized or intimidated by the usual ‘sixties’ scenes. It’s for anybody and everybody.

William Stout: Legends of the Blues – LuxuriaMusic, La Luz de Jesus

Legendary visual artist William Stout guests on Over Under Sideways Down – LuxuriaMusic.com, Wednesday May 1 3-5 PM Pacific. He will be signing his new book, Legends of the Blues at La Luz de Jesus Gallery on Saturday, May 4 from 6 – 9 PM.

LaLuz_Stout_LG_Blues

William Stout has a long and varied resume including paleontological illustrations, art exhibitions, feature film storyboards and production art, theme park design and a stint in radio with Firesign Theater. Close to the heart of music fans and record collectors, Stout was the guy who did the fabulous illustrations on the paper inserts and later, deluxe covers that adorned the legendary Trademark of Quality bootlegs in the 1970s (well documented in the book  Bootleg: The Secret History of the Other Recording Industry and on Stout’s website.) He also did a stint as art director for Bomp! Magazine.

Stout has just released a book / CD called Legends of the Blues. Inspired as most baby boomers by the British Invasion of the 1960s, Stout took a particular liking to The Yardbirds and ended up with the Sonny Boy Williamson and The Yardbirds LP which had a huge impact on him. He purchased a harmonica and dug deeply into the blues – both old and new, amassing quite a bit of blues knowledge and a substantial record collection. Decades later, Stout was recruited to create some artwork for Shout! Factory’s series of CDs by prominent blues artists. The label had licensed the Heroes of the Blues Trading Cards images created by R. Crumb for the series, but there were several musicians that he hadn’t drawn for the card set. Crumb did not want to create any more blues art so Stout was contacted and asked draw a few images for the series in the same format as Crumb’s card set. And, after he finished the CD art, he kept going – creating more and more images of blues legends and unknowns, even branching out to British and contemporary American bluesmen and women, while recovering from cancer surgery.

Stout loves and is passionate about this music, and it shows in his beautifully illustrated portraits and enthusiastic and loving one-page biographies of Robert Johnson, Ma Rainey, Billie Holiday, Howlin’ Wolf, Muddy Waters, Chuck Berry, Johnny Otis, Champion Jack Dupree and others. With the exception of Skip James and Blind Willie Johnson, none of the artists in this book are repeated from Crumb’s Heroes of the Blues card set. This book, including only performers born before 1930, will hopefully be the first of three blues books.

The Saturday Night and Sunday Morning – Legends of the Blues bonus music CD compiled and sequenced by Wiilliam Stout features tracks by Big Joe Williams, Mississippi Fred McDowell, Robert Nighthawk, Bukka White, Robert Wilkins, Mississippi Fred McDowell “This Little Light of Mine, Bukka White, Cow Cow Davenport, Big Joe Williams, Bukka White, Robert Wilkins, Mississippi Fred McDowell, Blind Willie McTell, and Buddy Moss.

Give a listen to William Stout this coming Wednesday, May 1 on LuxuraMusic.com and come to La Luz de Jesus Gallery to meet the artist in person on Saturday, May 4! La Luz de Jesus is located at 4633 Hollywood Blvd. Los Angeles, CA 90027, www.laluzdejesus.com. If you can’t make it and would like to purchase a signed book via mail, contact the shop at (323) 663-0122 or sales@soapplant.com

4/24: Artist Vicki Berndt on LuxuriaMusic.com

This week’s Over Under Sideways Down features special guest, artist Vicki Berndt along with your show host Lee Joseph. We’ll be talking music and art and playing some of Vicki’s favorite records!

VickiBerndtLuxuriaMusic.com

Vicki’s obsession with art, photography, and rock ‘n’ roll began early in life and continues to this day. As a child, she painted and photographed her favorite rock stars. In her teens, she was the singer of punk band called The Maggots (whose obscure AND legendary 1980 “Let’s Get Tammy Wynette” 45 now goes for hundreds of dollars) and became involved in the DIY fanzine scene, giving her and her pals reason to “sneak” backstage and interview bands. When her friends needed photos for their bands, she became a rock photographer which led her to work on album covers and music publications. Berndt has worked with Red Kross, The Muffs, Long Gone John’s Sympathy for the Record Industry, Dionysus Records, Sub Pop, Slash, IRS and many other bands, labels and music publications. Berndt currently creates merchandise for the estates of both Dee Dee and Johnny Ramone and continues to do commissions as well as merchandise in her Etsy store. Her art show, Idle Worship opens at La Luz de Jesus Gallery on Friday, May 3 with an artist reception from 8-11 PM. The show stays up through June 2.
