Product Information

Original unplayed nm stock copies of The Shangri-Las "Past, Present and Future" b/w "Paradise

"Past, Present and Future" is the final Shangri-Las release (1966) on their original label, Red Bird. It is also one of the more difficult Shangri-Las recordings to find, since Red Bird was in decline at the time of its' release. Red Bird was originally started by R&B icons Jerry Lieber and Mike Stoller, and they brought in legendary record mogul George Goldner to help with producing and song selection. Red Bird became one of the biggest and hottest new labels in 1964, with smashes by The Dixie Cups, The Shangri-Las, The Jelly Beans, The Trade Winds, etc. Besides Lieber and Stoller, the label had other top producers on hand such as Jeff Barry and Ellie Greenwich, Shadow Morton, and Barry Mann. However, by 1966/67, the 'girl group' sound was in decline, and so was Red Bird - with George Goldner one of the major reasons. George was as well known for his gambling habits as he was for his hit-picking acumen, since in his long career, he lost his "Tico", "Gee", "Rama", and "End" labels all due to gambling debts, and was ultimately forced to sell them one by one to Roulette Records. Some of Goldner's connections would visit Red Bird - men in shiny suits with bulging breast pockets - who swaggered around the office claiming to own 50% of the operation. Lieber and Stoller wanted out - selling their stake to Goldner for just one dollar, while wisely retaining the publishing rights, (the matrix numbers originally had "LS" as a prefix for "Lieber Stoller" - now having "GG" for George Goldner"). This (as usual) atmospheric, dramatic production by Shadow Morton for The Shangri-Las was their last for the label before leaving for Mercury Records. Arranged and conducted by Artie Butler. Engineered by Brooks Arthur. Produced by Shadow Morton. Highest chart position: #59.
