4/3: Fillmore West + Greatful Dead artist Dennis Larkins book signing at La Luz

Saturday, April 3, Dennis Larkins’ “Startling Art: Revealing the Art of Dennis Larkins” book signing follows the artists’ exhibition opening at La Luz de Jesus Gallery

Saturday, April 3, 6pm – 9pm

La Luz de Jesus Gallery

Los Angeles, CA 90027

Phone: (323) 666-7667

www.laluzdejesus.com

Opening at La Luz de Jesus Gallery on April 2nd (alongside fellow pop-surrealist Max Grundy), Read Between the Lines: The Art of Dennis Larkins, is a three-week show – his first L.A. showing in three years – featuring a new body of painted three-dimensional-relief extravaganzas on display for the first time. Pioneering and refining a bold new approach to artistic expression, Dennis works in a style forged from both traditional and space age ingredients, creating layered works of arresting depth and intense optical punch. Growing up bathed in the glow of the Atomic Age is bound to scramble any thinking person’s circuits. Dennis has been turning to art to heal his radiation burns from the time America started planting its own mushroom forest out in the Nevada desert a few decades ago.

The opening accompanies the release of Larkins’ book, Startling Art: Revealing the Art of Dennis Larkins (published by La Luz De Jesus/Last Gasp), which takes an often-irreverent look at one man’s creative journey, both personal and professional. From his legendary posters for the Grateful Dead and monumental set designs (including many never before published photos of his days with Bill Graham Productions) to the meat of the book, a riotous smörgåsbord of pulp-surrealist fine art, page after picture-packed page reveals the startling contents of one of the “great unrecognized creative minds of the past half century.”

Come out to La Luz de Jesus Gallery on Friday, April 2nd, to meet the artist at the opening reception of his new show, “Read Between the Lines”, then come back on Saturday, April 3rd, for the launch of his new book, where Dennis will be available to sign copies.

For more of Dennis’ art and history, visit www.startlingart.com.

ART

“Iced Out” is a celebration of the artificial, acknowledging our tendency to embrace illusion in order to feel safe and receive emotional gratification. The fake cake sculptures, with their display of beauty and potential for satisfaction, lure the viewer into a sense of anticipation. They also contain elements, not immediately seen, that create a sense of anxiety and fear. This in turn creates a visual and emotional resonance that is intended to represent what we all have to deal with in our lives every day…the hunt for satisfaction and the anxiety that we won’t get it.

Scott Hove
‘s works encompasses a broad variety of media, from sculptural installations to painting. The cakes are formed using carvable polyurethane foam and plywood. They are frosted with a variety of acrylic media and accessorized with fake fruit and other objects found in stores or on the street.  The materials and techniques borrow from traditional and decorative arts and craft to render the oftentimes jarring objects and fantasy installations.

TREATS

All American Softy was started by Mike Munsantry, a former NY Police officer — who after being on duty during the tragedy at the September 11 World Trade Center and over a year afterward at Ground Zero during clean-up — packed up, moved west and started a “Mister Softee” style ice cream truck. All American Softy serves up soft serve ice cream cones dipped in chocolate with sprinkles, root beet floats and slushies, hot pretzels and hot drinks like espresso, tea and hot chocolate. Frank Sinatra and other smooth lounge sounds gently flow from the speakers of the spotless stainless steel All American Softy truck. www.allamericansofty.com

Sharlena Fong is the pastry chef at downtown L.A.’s Nickel Diner. The classically trained chef has worked in the kitchens of Danny Meyer, Thomas Keller and Joachim Splichal, and now makes her name with a menu comfort desserts such as Pop-Tarts with homemade jam, Ding Dongs with vanilla buttercream and other entirely decadent and delicious treats. www.nickeldiner.com

Fong’s pastries and All American Softy will sweeten up this fabulous opening AND celebrate of the expansion of La Luz de Jesus Gallery!

Max Grundy “Out Of Order”

“My work conveys a concept of the future from the perspective of the past. I infuse each of my images with rebelliousness, industry, freedom, conflict and impending disaster” states artist Max Grundy. By paralleling the Atomic Era and today’s times of terror, social and political pressures, Grundy gives his work a narrative that is both familiar and unprecedented. Created with enamel on aluminum panel, “Out of Order,” Grundy’s new body of work, portrays the tension created between man and technology and the impending apocalypse. Grundy’s interest in vintage 40’s/50’s era poster design is major inspiration on his art. He admires its use of unusual perspective, limited color palette, dramatic text and design to create maximum effect. Flat shapes and clean design are conducive with the time period of influence. Grundy believes this style has the ability to reach out and grab a viewer because of its economical graphic quality. Grundy’s works have been collected by the likes of Metallica’s James Hetfield, producer J.J. Abrams, Hell’s Angels founder Sonny Barger and “Overhauling” host Chris Jacobs. With a B.F.A. in Illustration and an M.F.A. degree in painting, drawing and art history, Grundy lives and works in Los Angeles, California as a full time artist. www.maxgrundy.com

Dennis Larkins: “Read Between The Lines – The Startling Art of Dennis Larkins”

Many years ago, when dinosaurs roamed the Earth and played loud rock music, multi-media dimensional assemblage and fine artist Dennis Larkins was busy bringing set design out of the Paleolithic with revolutionary arena rock stage concepts. Under the aegis of legendary promoter Bill Graham, Larkins brought a vision of monolithic drops to life in the form of towering painted backdrops and scrims. Taking what he’d learned as a painter of stage backdrops for the San Francisco Opera, Larkins almost single-handedly designed and painted the set decorations for the annual “Day on the Green” music festivals, such as the original legendary “Monsters of Rock” festival (featuring Aerosmith and Ted Nugent), concerts for Led Zeppelin (in what would prove to be their last American concert), the Eagles, Journey, and many more legends of Seventies rock.

Bill Graham Productions’ development of the stadium/arena as a venue for concerts, demanded performances that delivered a memorable show not only in terms of the music, but in the visual aspect as well. Larkins was one of the earliest developers of these revolutionary new staging concepts. Working from a design, often conceptualized in conjunction with BGP producer Peter Barsotti and executed in a matter of days, Larkins would literally hand paint and hang extremely large, full sized backropdrops from the stage superstructure. . In addition, Larkins also performed yeoman’s work as a graphic artist for BGP producing t-shirt designs and posters. Larkins career as a set designer reached its zenith when he designed and implemented the Rolling Stones 1981 American tour set package in conjunction with Japanese graphic artist Kazú.

In the next two decades, Larkins saw an evolution into a respected career in themed exhibit and attraction design, taking a job in the Disneyland Parade Float Shop, where all those nifty floats you see making their way down Main St. three to five times a day are constructed.  Soon after, Larkins moved up to a desk job as a Walt Disney Imagineer.  He later went on to work for a diverse spectrum of theming outfits, both on a freelance basis and as full-time employee, from the Korean company SuperTech to local contractor SpectraF/X,  from MCA/Universal to Warner Bros. Studio Stores to Sega GameWorks. Larkins filled what free time he had with his own work in fine art.  It was during the ‘70s and ‘80s that Larkins developed and refined his dimensional technique, at first with great gobs of paint, later in mixed media using various plastics and flexible materials.

“Read Between The Lines…” accompanies the release of Larkins’ book, “Startling Art: Revealing the Art of Dennis Larkins” (published by La Luz De Jesus / Last Gasp)  which takes an often-irreverent look at one man’s personal creative journey, both personal and professional.  From his legendary posters for the Grateful Dead and monumental set designs including many never before published photos of his days with Bill Graham Productions, to the meat of the book, a riotous extravaganza of pop-surrealist fine art, page after picture-packed page reveals the startling contents of one of the great unrecognized creative minds of the past half century.

Larkins earned his BFA degree from the Kansas City Art Institute with post graduate studies at Yale University and at Colorado U. in Boulder. Larkins’ art is in the collections of the Bill Grahm estate, Morgan Spurlock, John Malkovitch, Carl Gottlieb, Don Henley, “Cheech” Marin, Taran Smith, Jay Nailor and Billy Shire.

Cocktail Napkin Art Invitational Vol #2
:
The last show we had over 100 artists join our Cocktail Napkin Art Dept. We provide the pens and napkins,  just bring your creative mind 🙂

Admission :
$7 flat rate or $5 with a recession story of 75-100 words, written prior or at the door or step into THE RECESSION CONFESSIONAL (brought to you by INSURGENCY INC), an easy way to save a few bucks, step into the booth and tell us your hard luck story. Written stories will be read by the patio host throughout the course of the evening. Live Confessions will be shown live and featured at http://insurgencyinc.com following the event.

The Story :
Originally the blues “Crossroads” was a literal right-angle crossing of two railroads – “where the Southern cross the Dog” – in Moorhead, Mississippi. The “Southern” was a line of the Southern Railway, sold to the Columbus and Greenville Railway in 1920, and the “Dog” was the “Yellow Dog”, officially the Yazoo and Delta Railroad, part of the Illinois Central Railroad system after 1897. This place is mentioned in a number of blues, including the recorded works of W. C. Handy and Bessie Smith. There songs were influenced by The king of the Delta Slide Guitar Robert Johnson who tells a story in his song “Cross Road Blues” about going down to the Crossroads and selling his soul to the devil to learn how to play guitar.

In Honor of Community Spirit – Carrying the Arts Torch we Remember :
Joel Bloom, who owned and operated Bloom’s General Store since 1994 in the Arts District of Los Angeles, was one of the forces responsible for bringing the Arts District much needed recognition. A sampling of his numerous achievements included bringing the community a bus route, 30 street lights, 75 trees, plus being active in the naming of the area known now known as the Arts District.

On July 3, the Los Angeles City Council honored Bloom by officially approving the Motion to rename Third and Traction in Downtown Los Angeles Joel Bloom Square.

Artist Jerico Woggon and his Downtown Los Angeles Cocktail Party

We’ve recently become friends with Jerico Woggon and paid a visit to his Downtown Los Angeles studio where we snapped several photos of his work area and the amazing view from his windows and roof. Here Jerico puts together his cocktail and blacklight art. Double click the slideshow to fullscreen!

[showtime]

Jerico Woggon is a painter, installation artist and creative event producer. Jerico’s inspirations include  the art of his grandfather, Bill Woggon (creator of the 1945 Archie comic book supermodel Katy Keene) and Southern California custom car culture. He was introduced to Led Zeppelin and The Doors before learning to walk and spent his childhood eating health food, surfing and skateboarding every day.  A leftover 1960s blacklight became his teenage “light at the end of the tunnel” which inspired him to play around with blacklight paint in the mid-80s. In the year 2000, Jerico created “The Year Of The Snake” which was 138 feet of blacklight art on canvas. In 2003, Jerico expanded the piece to 400 feet which was installed at the Coachella Music Festival. Jerico has also installed art at Burning Man, and numerous other art festivals. Jerico holds the #1 spot on Google for ‘blacklight art’ and is the 2010 feature window artist at Bert Green Fine Art on 5th and Main Street in Downtown Los Angeles.

“Being inside creation, that is the driving force. I create art installations that infuse the environment with vibrant colors, fashion and dance. The work seeks to bring you an energy that is created by the moment and for the moment. I want to create a space where you can have it all: good friends and beauty all around.” Jerico Woggon.

This coming Saturday February 27, Jerico will be throwing a Downtown LA Cocktail / Art Party. Jerico’s vision is to create an atmosphere where the past meets the present, future meets the past and old meets the new. This is the second in a series of monthly art concept cocktail parties in Downtown Los Angeles for 2010. Come on down and meet the fun spirits of the New Downtown Los Angeles Renaissance Cocktail Nightlife for a Swinging Shindig full of special surprises and good times.

I SLEPT WITH
JOEY RAMONE
A Family Memoir
by Mickey Leigh with Legs McNeil

“While the Ramones remained an underground band, they are regarded today as a huge influence on the entire punk rock movement. Joey’s brother, Mickey Leigh . . .  recreates that electric era, striking all the right chords in this dynamic biography. With skillful writing, he finds Joey’s musical roots in their dysfunctional family life . . . Leigh’s and Legs’s mashup of memories with solid research makes for revelatory reading in this compelling portrait of a musical misfit who evolved into a countercultural icon.”  —Publishers Weekly

“Joey Ramone is feted with tough love in these cradle-to-grave memories
from his kid brother Mickey Leigh.”  —Kirkus Reviews

“Funny, sad, shocking, surprising, and best of all, brutally honest.” —John Holmstrom, cofounder of Punk magazine

“Blitzkrieg Bop,” “Rockaway Beach,” “I Wanna Be Sedated,” “Sheena is a Punk Rocker,” “Rock ‘n’ Roll High School.” With humor spiked lyrics, a shockingly unique delivery, and backed by the fast, frenetic music of his band, Joey Ramone gave voice to the disaffected youth of the seventies and eighties while defining punk rock in America.  I SLEPT WITH JOEY RAMONE: A Family Memoir (Touchstone, an imprint of Simon & Schuster; December 1, 2009; Hardcover/$26; 978-0-7432-5216-4) is the story of the turbulent life of one of America’s greatest rock icons, revealed for the first time by Joey Ramone’s brother, Mickey Leigh, with “Resident Punk” Legs McNeil.

Mickey tells his fascinating, though sometimes troubling, tale of growing up with a rock star with honesty, humor, and grace.  Before Joey Ramone’s signature sunglasses, face obscured by a mop of hair, and towering height became the personification of punk’s early image, he was simply Jeffry Hyman, born on May 19, 1951 in Forest Hills, New York.  Rock ‘n’ roll gave the lanky, awkward teen a sanity-saving outlet for his anti-social behaviors—which included the crippling Obsessive Compulsive Disorder that plagued him throughout his life.

In 1974 Jeff co-founded the Ramones with friends John Cummings and Douglas Colvin.  “Joey,” “Johnny,” “Tommy” and “Dee Dee Ramone” were soon regulars at CBGB’s, honing the brief, rapid-fire concert style that would soon become the stuff of legend.  The Ramones’ 1976 debut album, replete with hooky, three-chord songwriting, cheerfully dumb humor, and boundless energy, heralded the true birth of punk rock and created the blueprint that countless bands would follow to the top of the charts.

Despite their enormous musical and cultural influence, a career spanning two decades, and a handful of undisputedly classic albums, the uppermost levels of fame were always just out of reach for the Ramones.  The infighting, romantic betrayals, and addictions that tormented the band also strained personal relationships along the way.  As these pressures peaked, Mickey saw them take their toll on the kind, caring boy he once shared his bedroom with in Queens, who began to periodically display an uncharacteristically malicious persona. After forty years of extreme closeness, the two brothers engaged in a conflict that had them pushing and pulling at each other throughout much of the 1990’s, though, in the end it was Mickey who was again closest with his brother during Joey’s battle with lymphatic cancer that ultimately ended his life in 2001.

To ensure the story was balanced, complete, and told fairly, Mickey and Legs interviewed dozens of family, friends, colleagues, and industry professionals who were there as Joey’s life unfolded.  Both a tribute to the rise of punk in America and an intimate look at a journey filled with music and challenges, I SLEPT WITH JOEY RAMONE is an enduring portrait of a man who struggled to find his voice and of the brother who loved him.

MICKEY LEIGH has been an influential player in the rock & roll world since the late seventies.  After forming Birdland with Lester Bangs in 1977 he became the lead singer/guitarist/songwriter for the Rattlers and Stop and was a contributor to the music of the Ramones.  He has written the monthly column My Guitar is Pregnant for the Lower East Side-based newspaper the New York Waste since 1996; created and published the Coney Island High Times, a monthly magazine for famed rock club Coney Island High; and written reviews for magazines including Audio Review and Time Out New York.  This is his first book.  He lives in New York City.

LEGS MCNEIL is the coauthor of Please Kill Me: The Uncensored Oral History of Punk, a book widely hailed as the definitive work on the subject.  The cofounder of the seminal magazine that gave punk its name, he is a former editor at Spin and editor in chief of Nerve.  He divides his time between New York City and his home in Schwenksville, Pennsylvania.
