4/30: OUSD Random Stacks + guest Connie Benson on LuxuriaMusic

Connie Benson and Alberto Telo

Connie Benson and Alberto Telo

Tune in  Over Under Sideways Down on LuxuriaMusic.com on Wed 4/30, 3- 5 PM PST a random stack of fabulous records from soul to psych, doo-wop to country, plus special guest, guitarist Connie Benson from New Zealand!

It’s been a while since I’ve done a non-themed show… in the past few months I’ve found a great pile of records on my trips to the desert as well as some great purchases from Evil Bay and friends on Facebook… which I will share with you on my sixth episode of “Random Stacks of Records from around my Living Room and Other Places in the House…”

My pals Warren and Connie from New Zealand will drop by, capping off their epic two-and-a-half month visit to the States. Have a listen to Connie’s manic guitar here!

Dionysus bands, Dionysus mail-order cart, Dionysus Records, Dukes of Hamburg

Limited represses of two Dukes of Hamburg LPs!

ID123359_DukesTwistTime.600Last year when moving the Dionysus Records office I found a few boxes of empty Dukes of Hamburg LP covers. Shortly after, our old pal, Dukes of Hamburg’s  Thilo Pieper reconnected with Dionysus, giving us news that there are now two reformed Dukes, in the US and Germany, and sending over some new recordings of his version of the  group based in Bielefeld, Germany. We agreed to do a new LP and run enough LPs to fill the empty jackets for both Bad Side of July (Dukes of Earl) (around 300 copies) and Twist-Time im Star-Club Hamburg (around 400 copies) LPs. Both are available via Dionysus Records Mail Order (follow the above links)  as well as select shops and internet mail order companies… you can only get them on vinyl as there are no CD or download versions of either! The represses also have different label designs than the originals, courtesy of Thilo!

ID123377_DukesOfHamburg_BadSideThe new Dukes of Hamburg release Liverpool Beat on Dionysus will be out soon, we’ll let you know when it’s just about ready to ship!

Thorazine back together – Philly show May 3!

ThoarzinePicWay back in the 90s, Dionysus Records had a marvelous Philly punk group on its’ Hell Yeah label called Thorazine. We did two LPs and two 7″ with them, and even with the miles between Thorazine and the label – due to their constant touring and a couple of visits to Philly by Dionysus staff, the group, myself and everyone else at label got to spend quite a bit of time together. Those were memorable times for all of us!

Thorazine were more than a band, they were a family. In the 90’s they lived together in a big old house in West Philly rehearsing and writing songs in the basement.  Then they toured as much as possible. As families do at times, the band parted ways and moved on with life although all the band members have remained in Philadelphia. In 2013 Heather Gillespie decided to make a documentary about the Dead Squirrel Wedding featured on Thorazine’s first album on Hell Yeah Records titled, Crazy Uncle Paul’s Dead Squirrel Wedding. Her project reunited the band for the first time in a decade. After their reunion was filmed as part of the documentary, the band was surprised to find that they were still finishing each others sentences after so much time apart. Slowly they were all in contact with each other regularly and they decided to get together to see if it would still be fun to play together. It was magical like back in the day and quickly they had a show booked.  The show on May 3rd in Philadelphia is about to sell out six weeks before the show. The band is beyond excited to be back together rehearsing weekly.  They are so humbled that so many people are enthusiastic to see them hit the stage again.  Who knows what adventures this reunion will bring the band next. Only time will tell, stay tuned.

4/9: Chris Ashford on OUSD, LuxuriaMusic

What, Iloke and Wondercap Records legend Chris Ashford guests on OUSD, LuxuriaMusic.com with your host Lee Joseph

Over 30 years ago, Chris Ashford released a single by his high school pals, The Germs. That single, “Forming” b/w “Sex Boy” is now widely recognized as the first Los Angeles indie punk release. In the past three decades, Chris has released legendary punk records by The Controllers, The Dils, The Skulls and others on his What Records label, the first extensive Bel-Airs reissue as well as surf revival records on his Iloke label and now Chris is exploring the jazz world on his Wondercap label. Expect to hear many of Chris’ releases as well as numerous stories about the early LA punk scene and what he is up to today!

germs_firstlabel

Chris has worked with Dionysus on numerous releases and has always been a friend of mine and the label, I am looking forward to spending two hours with him and sharing with listeners!
