Martini Kings to release vinyl LP with SHAG cover on Dionysus!

The Martini Kings’ first vinyl LP, Palm Springs Serenade, will be released by Dionysus Records on July 10. The LP features cover art by SHAG. The band will play a record release party (and closing  for Brad “Tiki Shark” Parker’s art show) at La Luz de Jesus Gallery on July 29, details here.

With over eight self-released CDs and gigs-a-plenty, it’s about time that Los Angeles based jazzy-retro-exotica-bossa-nova-cocktail-lounge combo The Martini Kings make an appearance on the beloved vinyl format. In their professional existence, The Martini Kings have performed events for the likes of Clint Eastwood, Stephen King, The Getty Center, Mattel and Universal Studios, had their music in HBO’s “Entourage” and made an appearance during the Malibu cliff-top wedding scene in the ”Six Feet Under’‘ season curtain-raiser. The Martini Kings’ Marsico brothers have performed in backing groups with Bob Dylan, Neil Young and Marianne Faithful. Martini Kings bassist Tony Marsico was in East LA punk legends The Plugz and The Cruzados, and played bass behind Bob Dylan on David Letterman’s show.

Their pro-resume aside, The Martini Kings are also loved among tiki and retro aficionados and are a staple at the yearly Tiki Oasis weekender, numerous burlesque, lounge events and backyard tiki parties. They have the technique and sound down to a fine art and in the process inject equal amounts of heart and soul into their craft. The instrumentation is centered around vibes, stand-up bass and percussion with tasty arrangements including piano, guitar, wind and stringed instruments.

“Palm Springs Serenade” is a collection of the group’s favorite tracks from their CD releases and features a track recorded with lounge legend and former Rat Pack member Buddy Greco. The art of their pal SHAG adorns the album cover and visually fits the combo’s sound from top to bottom. And, the sound on this album which was cut on a vintage Scully lathe with the legendary Westrex B3 stereo cutting head is huge and open with lots of warm low-end. The album jacket is printed vintage style; front cover slick on thick board… this is not your ordinary one piece fabricated album jacket but the Martini Kings / SHAG combination deserves no less.  A coupon for a digital download is included in this package.

Black vinyl 180 gram LPs will be shipped to Dionysus Records’ distribuor, ILD (Independent Label Distribution). A limited edition of 100 CLEAR VINYL LPs will be avalible from the band and through Dionysus Records Mailorder only – on JULY 10!

Matthew Bone Paradise Lost

Raised on a diet of comic books, horror movies, and pornography, Matthew Bone injects a distinctive voice into his painting: pride, lust, vengeance, the lurid underbelly of humanity, and the allegories that illustrate the consequences of its revelation has long been the focus of Bone’s oil, acrylic and panel works. By utilizing the conventions of pop culture, and its willingness to embrace the artifice as the sincere, Bone is able to create a reinvisioned modern mythology.

“Come with me and join the Darkside.” the ventilated voice said as it’s owner’s gloved hand extended towards the hero. In my story, he accepted and a new world was opened up to him, breaching the inner sanctum of the old. Growing up a latchkey kid in the 80’s, my unattended viewing and reading habits slowly migrated towards the adult at far too early of an age. While I still had the rich, innocent  imaginary life of a boy who could defeat an alien invasion or help save the city from his archnemesis, the shadow of a different interior world was cast. In my newest body of work the icons and visual cliches of two seemingly disparate spheres collide (comics, Star Wars, toys vs. Hustler, Chic, Juggs) finally forming what has long brewed in my head into a tangible visual language for the first time” states Bone (who lives with his ol’ lady and menagerie of pets at the bottom of a wishing well in downtown Los Angeles) about “Paradise Lost.”

Soey Milk Malus Sieversii

Soey Milk depicts lone women in romance, she gifts the ladies with symbols of pleasure and agony.

Often enriched with subtle oddity or darkness, her delicate oil on paper works tell stories of tender and sensitive shared encounters. She is in love with lily specialists. “Malus Sieversii” is Milk’s very first feature exhibition, but her work has been featured in Blue Canvas Magazine, on the High Fructose Blog, and the artist herself has been the subject of much internet forum discussion. Her debut signals the start of a new era of classical painting, in a very contemporary package.

“I throw the apple at you, and if you are willing to love me, take it and share your girlhood with me; but if your thoughts are what I pray they are not, even then take it, and consider how short-lived is beauty.”
-Plato, Epigram VII  www.milkbomb.blogspot.com

Bonni Reid Cartes de Visite

Cartes de Visite
:  Noun, French. 1. Small photographs, traditionally mounted on card stock, for mailing and trading purposes. Used during the Victorian era. Having a professional career in creating Saturday morning cartoons, Bonni Reid wanted to break from this candy-coated world in order to depict another side of childhood, one that is much darker, haunting or just plain weird — to evoke a time before we child-proofed everything. By utilizing old photographs of family, friends and found images, this collection portrays the alter ego that resides in all of us — the real inner child which isn’t always what we as adults want it to be.

Reid lives in the West End of Vancouver, British Columbia. Her work has appeared in various galleries throughout North America. Aside from brewing her own visual concoctions, she is an illustrator, graphic designer and an animation colour designer. www.bonnireid.com

Christine Wu Shhh…

Christine Wu‘s “Shhh…” is an exploration on the power of things left unsaid… Wu is a certified practitioner of the arts and general awesome maker. Stylistically, her oil and panel work is multi-layered with  creepy and sexual undertones. She often depicts people in flux and captures the vulnerability of growing up. She is rather fond of making a ruckus. www.misschristinewu.com

La Luz de Jesus 25th Anniversary Exhibit – Part Two

La Luz de Jesus 25, the milestone anniversary show and largest exhibition in the gallery’s history, launches its second half during the first weekend of November. The show runs through November 28. Following hard on the heels of October’s spectacular Part One, Part Two features more than 120 artists, including Shawn Barber, Gary Baseman, Tim Biskup, Al Farrow, Chris Mars, Elizabeth McGrath, Jason Mecier, Mark Mothersbaugh, Marion Peck, The Pizz, Mark Ryden, Shag, Peter Shire, Joe Sorren, Mark Todd and Eric White. For a full list of all artists showing in La Luz de Jesus 25 Part Two, click this link.

This exhibition is documented in the beautiful companion book, La Luz de Jesus 25: The Little Gallery That Could, featuring images of all the art in the show, a personal anecdote about Billy Shire and the gallery written by each artist, essays by gallery directors and a foreword by Shire. The book is much more than a simple record of this remarkable exhibition. Together, the images and essays present a history of La Luz de Jesus through the eyes of the artists whose careers are intertwined with Shire and his gallery.

Mark Gleason – “Mannerism”

preview the show here

In “Mannerism,” Mark Gleason continues to use Mannerist techniques with oil on canvas to explore existential themes via absurdist situations. Animals are often included to define aspects of the relationship of a central character’s orientation or connection to the world via communion or costume in psychologically fraught, private environments. Gleason’s subjects are shown in moments of preparation and conflict — his figures have roles to assume, and in doing so, a form of inner self is revealed.  His metaphoric images may seem cryptic but represent the underdog and the disenfranchised deriving fearsome capability from the mask of the powerful; figures communing with animals, or donning the guise of animals, holding knives out like some kind of animal self-protection stance or the Sisyphean struggle of attempting to lift books when you’re standing on them.

“Hopefully, my wit comes through in each painting. I would feel successful if I could convey the same kind of absurd humor found in Samuel Beckett’s writing. The imagery is a construct that has multiple meanings and layers and I leave blanks for the viewers to fill in. I’ve come to see that others bring their own stories and feelings to the work. I’ve intentionally fostered that kind of response with recent work, and I’m honored and challenged in creating something that may spark others to open their own responses to the work. I resonate to a statement by Degas to the effect that art is not what you see, but what you make others see.” states Gleason, whose work is also inspired by novelist Cormac McCarthy and silent film star Buster Keaton.

In addition to painting, Mark teaches high school art in Palo Alto, California and writes a daily music blog, “what do we have for entertainment”. This is Gleason’s second featured exhibition at La Luz de Jesus Gallery. www.markgleason.net

Daniel Lim – “Sweet IMperfections”

preview the show here

Fawn Fruits aka Daniel Hyun Lim relishes the spontaneity of the art and moves things as he goes with colored pencils and acrylics. His works are somewhat timeless with a striking juxtaposition of muted versus vibrant hues. The colors are an anchor to reality and are a huge factor to the symbolic message that he is telling. “Somewhere over the colors of the rainbow there lies a significantly beautiful truth, a truth that can only be realized with an intimate encounter. “Sweet IMperfections” is an artistic interpretation of a promise between the creation and his/her creator” states the artist. Rather than forcefully preaching to the viewer with religious imagery and symbolism, Lim brings new life to the genre by producing work that is based on his personal views on religion. “Although we see ourselves as imperfect souls, in the eyes of a loved one, we are perfect” states Lim who feels that there are enough serious paintings in the world that shout and make big statements. He wants his work to be more subtle and speak peacefully to the viewer and to bring a moment of tranquility. His dream is to show the world some love, one Fawn Fruits at a time. Lim is an illustration instructor at Otis college of Art and Design, Santa Monica College and Red Engine Studios. www.fawnfruits.com

Danni Shinya Luo – “Chaotic Harmony”

preview the show here

Danni Shinya Luo’s female forms breathe with a sensuality and intuition that will shatter your preconceptions about her chosen medium, the watercolor painting. Shinya’s fluid and organic figures are full of feminine mystery and romance. Her colorful animals are magnificently fierce, emanating a primal magnetism that is practically pheremonic. In “Chaotic Harmony,” using whimsical and subtly erotic figures, the interactions of human beings with their avatars from the animal kingdom convey modern psychological truths while relating age-old mythologies. The concept of this new collection is birthed from the artist’s own internal world; her past experiences are transformed into physical creatures, textures and color palettes. The subtextural inclusion of archetypal symbolism is never forced nor heavy-handed, but further enriches the central, “surface” view with allegorical depth –a reward for those willing to investigate just a bit further…

Originally from Shanghai, China, Danni Shinya Luo moved to California in 1995. She fell in love with art in grade school and after a few years of private study (and an apprenticeship with Chinese watercolor master, Ding Ha) was accepted into Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, where she majored in illustration and graduated with honor in 2006. Shinya participated in key group shows, select solo exhibitions, and saw her work published in periodicals like Bust and Initiativa, books like “Eye Candy” and “Sugar & Spice,” as well as design projects like Nickelodeon’s Neopets and a line of toy dolls for Hasbro. In the year that has passed since her last featured exhibition, “Spiritual Deficiencies,” Shinya has published a now sold-out collected volume of her gallery exhibited work, “Breaking the Ice.” She also helped develop the re-branding of Marvel Comics’ signature female mutant “X-23” (providing the cover art for the first three issues). Later this year, her second book, “Soft Candy: The Art of Danni Shinya Luo,” will be released through seminal art publisher Last Gasp Books, featuring a collection of 200 full color pages of brand-new drawings and paintings. www.fawnfruits.com

Heather Watts – “Small Heroes”

preview the show here

Suffused with pessimistic shadows and redemptive illumination, Canadian pop-surrealist painter Heather Watts’ intricate paintings harness the pageantry of anthropomorphic heroes and martyrs to tell the story of individuals grappling with forces larger than themselves. “Some of the pieces for this show are quite dark thematically, but I’m not interested on focusing on the darkness for its own sake in my work, I’m interested in using it to show light, to paint darkness as something that reveals light, to see the darkness as a canvas for light, an opportunity for light to shine”  states the artist.

Watts, who is well-known for her past tiki-inspired paintings has exhibited works in galleries across the US and overseas, including La Luz de Jesus, Strychnin, The Shooting Gallery, M Modern, and Roq la Rue among others.  She is a self-taught painter with a Bachelors Degree in Asian Area Studies from the University of British Columbia. www.heatherwatts.com

Mick Farren is a legendary poet, musician, author, critic, activist, countercultural icon, and one of the last true gonzo journalists. Enter his paranoid, radical, drug-addled and excruciatingly beautiful world; go to jail during the L.A. Earthquake, meet Doc Holliday and take a ride in Diabolo’s Cadillac. ZONES OF CHAOS is a maelstrom of poetry, prose, essays, lyrics, commentary, and fiction. It includes an introduction by Michael Moorcock.

Farren was the singer with the proto-punk band The Deviants between 1967 and 1969, releasing three albums. In the mid-1970s, he briefly revived his musical career, releasing the EP Screwed Up, album Vampires Stole My Lunch Money and single “Broken Statue“. The album featured fellow NME journalist Chrissie Hynde and Dr. Feelgood guitarist Wilko Johnson.

As a journalist In the early 1970s, Farren contributed to the UK Underground press such as the International Times, also establishing Nasty Tales which he successfully defended from an obscenity charge. He later wrote for the main stream New Musical Express, for which he wrote the article The Titanic Sails At Dawn, an analysis of what he considered the malaise afflicting then-contemporary rock music and which described the conditions that subsequently resulted in punk. To date he has written 23 novels, including the Victor Renquist novels and the DNA Cowboys sequence. His 1989 novel The Armageddon Crazy deals with a post-2000 United States which is dominated by fundamentalists who subvert the Constitution. Farren has written 11 works of non-fiction, a number of biographical (including four on Elvis Presley), autobiographical and culture books (such as The Black Leather Jacket) and much poetry. From 2003 to 2008, he was a columnist for the weekly newspaper Los Angeles CityBeat. Jennybird Alcantara “Swooning at the River of Oblivion”

In a mingling of underwater and space realms, Jennybird Alcantara’s “Swooning at the River of Oblivion” depicts characters positioned between the waking world and the world of sleep, and a continued exploration of dual nature, created with oil on wood, acrylic on paper and mixed media dolls. The works are inspired in part by the mythology of Nyx, the primordial goddess of nighttime, Morpheus the Greek god of dreams as well as a quote from a Nick Cave song that reads “You jump into the Abyss to find, it only goes up to your knees”.

Alcantara’s work has at its core a narrative; She explores the complex interconnectedness of opposites as seen through the prism of myth, fable and fantasy using the symbolism of duality to explore the connection of life and death, as well as the relationship between the beauty and cruelness of nature, that of the natural world as well as human and animal nature. The anthropomorphic qualities in her characters show the relationship of the central figure to the world she inhabits. Her inspirations come from a wide variety of sources including fairytales and fables, mythology, the flora and fauna of the natural world and freaks of nature, melancholy and classical music, Victorian customs, folk art, costuming, creepy religious statues and paintings, Symbolism, carnivals, trips down memory lane, broken dolls and objects out of place, as well as all the beautiful and sad things that could not exist one without the other, life and death and the veil in between. Alcantara attended the San Francisco Art Institute where she earned her BFA, and currently lives and works in San Francisco. http://www.jennybirdart.com

George Thomas “The Best Cars Of Our Lives”

George Thomas spent his formative years surrounded by Googie architecture, automobiles with tremendous tailfins, theme parks, advertising and old Hollywood movies  in 1950s-1960s Orange County, California and it reflects in his art. Mixing the real with the surreal, sometimes separately and sometimes in the same piece, Thomas uses oil on canvas to portray a variety of subject matter, from landscapes and floral pictures, cars, mid-century architectural portraits, and iconic allegories, the latter of which are intricate, complex, retro-futuristic and nostalgic. Thomas, a father of three, is a graduate, with honors, from Art Center College of Design in Pasadena and currently lives in the high desert country of the Antelope Valley. www.artbygeorgethomas.com
