While the weather in Southern California might be getting colder this time of year, it certainly doesn’t affect the spirit of the thriving instrumental Surf Music scene.  For the 3rd year in a row, the organizers responsible for one of the largest Surf Music events of the year, the SurfGuitar 101 Convention, have assembled some of the world’s best contemporary live Surf Music bands for an incredible seven-hour extravaganza of reverb-drenched guitar goodness at the 3rd Annual Winter Surf Fest.

WinterSurfFest

From the San Diego area comes Jason Lee and the R.I.P. Tides, a hard-edged trio that will be promoting the debut of their first full length LP on Dionysus Records.  From Northern California comes the masters of traditional Jewish tunes gone Surf, Meshugga Beach Party, complete with beards, outfits and shtick. In a special reunion performance comes San Diego’s The Sand Devils, who bring their unmistakable brand of dark and ominous Surf. Local San Gabriel Valley favorites The Volcanics will don their trademark sweaters, take the listeners into a 60s time machine and perform many of the newer tunes from the recent release of their second album The Lonely One on Double Crown Records. Out of the ashes of one of the most influential of the 90’sSurf revival bands, The Ghastly Ones, comes Boss Fink, a Hot Rod-themed romp including former members of The Huntington Cads. And, rounding out the bill comes the day’s annual opener, High Tide, an all-star band featuring some of the best veteran players from the scene including members of The Torquays, The Planktones, The Reventlos and Insect Surfers.

In addition to the exceptional talent on stage, the event will feature a shopping area spilling over with specialized vendors selling Surf Music records, CDs, posters, t-shirts, books, magazines, musical instruments and other related accessories and collectibles.

The venue offers a full kitchen and bar throughout the show, so prepare to settle in, relax and enjoy an entire day of some of the very best pounding drums, throbbing bass, and dripping with reverb twangy guitars anywhere!

Summer really is a state of mind, especially during the cold months in Southern California. Nothing can prove it more than the right live musical soundtrack. For many fans the world over, this soundtrack is Surf Music, the instrumental genre created in the early 60.s by legendary bands such as The Belairs and Eddie & The Showmen. Machine gun staccato guitars drenched in dripping reverb, twangy plunk, bouncing bass, driving, tribal drums………most are unaware that the musical genre known as “Surf” that was catapulted onto the radar of modern pop-culture by Pulp Fiction has evolved and developed into a full-blown sub-culture with fanatic followers, complete with its own online ground zero, a website called (what else?) surfguitar101.com.

Once a year, the fanatics convene for a marathon 12-hour festival of all things surf–live performances by 8 of the best bands in the genre from all over the world, a “Living Legends of Surf Jam,” which features performance collaborations from the original players that were there back in the genre’s 60s beginnings, a surf music and memorabilia marketplace, and an extremely generous raffle featuring music, clothing, collectibles, and musical instruments and accessories from prominent makers/sponsors such as Fender, Eastwood, Nocturne Pedals and many more!

Now in its 5th year, the Surf Guitar 101 Convention has grown from a small gathering of geeks, to an all-out international festival, drawing attendees and interest from across the globe to Los Alamitos. Starting Gate, an all-age concert venue with full food menu and bar. 2012 promises to be the largest convention yet, with substantially increased advertising, marketing and corporate sponsorship.

5th Annual Convention Highlights:

–A historic reunion performance by the band that re-ignited interest in Surf Music in the 80s andushered in the so-called “Second Wave,” JON & THE NIGHTRIDERS –A Live set by the group that many consider the best modern surf band in the world, direct from Indiana, featuring material from their new album Tribal Fires, THE MADEIRA –A performance by Denmark Surf rockers El Ray, on their first American tour –The second US visit by Euro-Instro/Surf/Ska/Soul troupe Los Venturas from Belgium –From Wisconsin, one of the best traditional surf mainstays since 1994, The Exotics –Direct from Florida, Southeast Surf/Rockabilly/Space masters The Intoxicators! –Local Orange County, California Hot Rod/Surf legends The Dynotones–Celebrating their 6th album, East Coast Surf, Sci-Fi, Spy, Hot-Rod veterans 9th Wave –Incredible live reunion performances by first wave bands The Rumblers, of I Don’t Need You No More and Boss fame, and Southern California’s own The Nocturnes, famous for the classic Third Star from the Left
