Born out of a desire to challenge themselves musically, Mariachi El Bronx is the alter ego of Los Angeles punk band the Bronx. Conceived in 2006, the idea came about when the Bronx were asked to play an acoustic set and, rather than simply pare down their sound, they took their music in a whole new direction, moving away from hardcore and exploring Latin sounds. The band worked on material for the new project while the Bronx toured, and in 2009, Mariachi El Bronx released their eponymous debut. True to the form of their main gig, the band members followed up with a second self-titled album in 2011. In 2014, the group returned with Mariachi El Bronx (III), which found them fusing synthesizers and electronics into their traditional mariachi sound.
Opening for Mariachi El Bronx: Creepxotica!
San Diego’s Creepxotica combines the more exotic elements of surf music, the more surfy elements of exotica and the creepy elements of both, along with a bit of sea and jungle danger. Add in a shrunken head or two, a refreshing Mai Tai and a Zombie (not the kind you drink…) as well as numerous scantily clad go-go wahinis and you have a pretty accurate description of the group. A favorite of the Tiki Oasis crowd and beloved in their hometown of San Diego, Creepxotica sounds just like what their name implies. Oh, and Creepxotica is the alter-ego of a well-known San Diego surf skater aggro tiki garage band. The “Creep” in Creepxotica should be enough hint for you… The group will have two new albums out on Dionysus Records in the Spring of 2017!
