All are welcome to log in and join the conversation!

A History Lesson Part One

In 1984, a teenage Dave Travis decided to capture punk rock in Los Angeles on video tape, a fascination and hobby that he would continue until 1997, logging in hundreds of hours of Los Angeles area shows and interviews. Over 25 years later, Travis has assembled and released some of his archives. In A History Lesson Part 1, Travis presents live footage filmed in the spring of 1984 featuring the Meat Puppets, Minutemen, Twisted Roots and Redd Kross interspersed with interviews of members from each group which examines and puts a perspective on the early years of “psychedelic” punk rock in Los Angeles and Phoenix, AZ.

Dave TravisDAVE TRAVIS

Videographer Dave Travis grew up in Los Angeles where his dad worked as a cameraman for NBC and CBS news as well as TV shows such as “Chips” and “Fantasy Island.” When he was 15 his dad handed down to him an old video camera and he began shooting punk rock shows in Los Angeles. He eventually became a freelance video editor, working on projects such as Black Flag’s “Slip It In” video as director and editor, “1991 the Year Punk Broke” featuring Sonic Youth and Nirvana as editor,  the Kurt Cobain memorial for the 94 MTV Music Awards as editor, and many more. Travis also ran a recording studio with his sister, bassist Abby Travis, called Tarantula Ranch and in the mid ’80s helped pioneer the desert Generator Shows.

Travis captured punk bands on video in L.A. for 14 years until 1997 when he decided to put down his camera. In 2000 he became a teacher with stints at John Adams Middle School teaching World and U.S. History and Santee Education Complex, a High School in South Central, L.A. teaching History and Economics. After spending nearly a decade as a teacher, Travis re-united with his passion for video and began digitizing and restoring his old footage. “A History Lesson Part One” is the first fruit harvested from his archive. Travis also plays cello in the long-time Los Angeles punk / psychedelic / jazz band Carnage Asada. A full bio of Dave Travis is available here:

Beyond Eden Award Presentation Ceremony For Artist Robert Williams:

At 8pm on Saturday, October 10, the organizers of Beyond Eden along with Billy Shire and Matt Kennedy of La Luz de Jesus Gallery will present a lifetime achievement award to artist Robert Williams.

Williams is a painter, cartoonist, and founder of Juxtapoz Art & Culture Magazine. Williams is one of the originators of Kustom Kulture and in the late 1960s – early 1970s, was part of the Zap Collective, along with other underground cartoonists such as Robert Crumb and Gilbert Shelton. His mix of California car culture, cinematic apocalypticism, and film noir helped to create a new genre of psychedelic imagery. Williams’s first ground breaking book, “The Lowbrow Art of Robt. Williams” released in 1979 gave name to a new “movement” which has stuck to this day. The title of the book was meant as a statement on the current “Highbrow” tone of the Art world and how Williams’ work did not fit in with this idealism. In the 1980s Williams caught the frenzied vibe of the punk rock movement and found his next audience. IN 1994, Williams began the magazine JUXTAPOZ which propelled to fame many new artists and rose to become one of the highest circulated art magazines. Williams consistently remains vital to the new contemporary art scene and his works, shows and appearances are highly sought after and attended. http://www.robtwilliamsstudio.com

“My paintings are not designed to entertain you, they are meant to trap you, to hold you before them while you try to rationalize what elements of the picture are making you stand there.” Robert Williams

“Williams’ influence on alternative art is immeasurable” Barrett S. Bingham

“There are 22 cards in the Major Arcana, each showing some aspect of the human experience. The cards of the Major Arcana are focused on three themes: the realm of the material world, the realm of the intuitive mind, and the realm of change.”

The Lowbrow Tarot Project will showcase 23 artists who will use their creative and unique styles to take on the tarot 22 Major Arcana and original card back totaling 23 new works of art in the rugged glow of the lowbrow art movement to be displayed in an exhibition at La Luz de Jesus on October 1, 2010.

The group exhibition will feature 23 new and original works by renowned and accomplished artists Carrie Ann Baade, Christopher Ulrich, Edith Lebeau, Cate Rangel, Kris Kuksi, Chris Mars, Christopher Umana, Chris Conn, Brian M. Viveros, Claudia Drake, Heather Watts, Molly Crabapple, David Stoupakis, Laurie Lipton, Patrick “Star 27″ Deignan, Chet Zar, Jessica Joslin, Danni Shinya Luo, Jennybird Alcantara, Angie Mason, Scott G. Brooks, Aunia Kahn and Daniel Martin Diaz.

Curator and artist Aunia Kahn developed the project after the completion of her own 78 card Silver Era Tarot deck and believed most artists would enjoy the exploration of divination without the commitment to a larger, overwhelming project. In addition, a hardcover tabletop book and full color tarot card deck of the work will be produced.

The second edition of Beyond Eden will be hosted by the Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery at Barnsdall Park this coming October. Beyond Eden is a multi-gallery event celebrating the new contemporary art scene in Los Angeles. The public is invited to attend this special event and admission is free.

After the overwhelming success of last year’s Beyond Eden exhibition which drew over 5,000 people over the course of the weekend, the organizers are keeping the focus of the event on the new contemporary art movement. This genre of art has been building momentum and a patron base in Los Angeles for the past several decades and is finally starting to receive mainstream recognition from major institutions and publications the world over.

Beyond Eden will showcase the works of over a half dozen galleries and will be held inside the beautiful confines of the historic Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery during the weekend of October 9th and 10th with an opening night celebration planned for Saturday, October 9th. Participating galleries include Carmichael Gallery, C.A.V.E. Gallery, Copro Gallery, Crewest, La Luz De Jesus, LeBasse Projects, and Thinkspace.

Beyond Eden will also feature the presentation of a lifetime achievement award to the one and only Robert Williams. In addition the event will also feature live painting demonstrations throughout the gallery alongside special installations from local street artist Shark Toof and Australian artistic duo Dabs Myla. Rounding out this event is a special showcase celebrating underground art event Cannibal Flower’s 10 Year Anniversary.

Founded in 1951, the Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery is a historic 10,000 square foot facility located on the sprawling grounds of Olive Hill in the Barnsdall Art Park. The park overlooks the city of Los Angeles and is also home to the famous Frank Lloyd Wright Hollyhock House and Arts Complex. Under the Department of Cultural Affairs, the LAMAG is the premier city-run gallery that focuses on contemporary art, particularly the work of living Southern California artists.

The Visual and Aural Dreamscapes of Kelly Haigh

Kelly Haigh “9PM”,  24×24, acrylic on canvas,  at the “Summertime Show” at El Kartel in Vancouver.

Kelly Haigh lives, paints, and cuts hair in Vancouver, where she also sings and plays in the band, Ashley Park. She is currently obsessed with Victorian Taxidermy, and plans on turning her tiny hair salon into her own private natural history museum. There is a story on Kelly’s website, which speaks of her stuffed crow, whom she’s named Jack T. Crow, and how he takes her on his back to some magical, yet sometimes terrifying places, and how he has her paint all the scenes they witness together in that surreal landscape of dreams.

Country Western Star starring Kelly Haigh with Francis the singing dog CD

Kelly Haigh has created an album of surreal dreamscapes and opens the gates to a universe you exist in momentary somewhere between consciousness and dreams as you are drifting away to sleep. “Country Western Star” is an auditory equivalent of her paintings and encompasses numerous elements of pop and surrealism, cuteness, terror, beauty and fear, in a cloud covered atmosphere with stories rooted on this planet but somehow not of this earth.

The intro to the liner notes tell the story well and go like this:

“Country Western Star walks in the shadowlands, singing her songs to the critters of the forest and tending to the vast gardens filled with unmarked graves. She is the keeper of justice, guided by her trusted compass, which is not marked with the usual North, South, East or West but instead bears the letters L.M.F. & R. LOVE, MURDER, FORGIVNESS, REVENGE”

“Country Western Star starring Kelly Haigh with Frances the singing dog” is a package to behold; from Kelly’s art which adorns the cover, the eight-panel fold-out insert, the six-panel fold-out CD jacket and the music itself featuring 25 surreal musical stories.
