Get Ready for a Hot Lava Holiday with Don Tiki!

Those who live in Southern California, Seattle and Honolulu are in for a treat – Don Tiki will be coming to help us celebrate the holidays, Hot Lava style with shows on December 15 in Honolulu (sorry that one is sold out), December 17th in Seattle at Benaroy Hall (info and tickets) and December 20th in Los Angeles at Walt Disney Concert Hall ( info and tickets ) – and, SOCA peeps –  here’s a link for discount tickets at the Disney show!

HotLavaCover

Fans can expect the band’s signature tunes such as “The Natives Are Restless” and “An Occasional Man.” “Even though we’re tiki-worshipping Pagans, we’ll drop six new  holiday songs to get into the spirit of things,” says producer Lloyd “Fluid Floyd” Kandell, who was one of Anthony Bourdain’s drinking guides when the food impresario visited O’ahu for his series No Reservations. Bourdain came away raving, “Tiki supergroup Don Tiki knows the world, the subculture of tiki…it really doesn’t get much better than this!”

Though the band has lost their beloved lead singer Delmar deWilde, to whom the shows are dedicated, they will carry on with their multi-talented cast and a few added guests. The Don Tiki troupe consists of band leader and composer, Kit “Perry Coma” Ebersbach on keyboards, bassist and purring song stylist Hai-Jung, Charles Degala and Tei Tatafu, Jr. on virile vocals, vocalist, dancer and comedienne Sherry Shaoling, percussionist Lopaka Colón, who continues his illustrious father Augie Colon’s jungle and bird call tradition, tenor ace Tim Mayer on reeds, multi-talented Abe Lagrimas, Jr. on vibes and percussion, tribal drummer Jason Segler, space-age Ryoko Oka on keyboards and t’rung (a Vietnamese bamboo xylophone), exotic dancer Violetta Beretta plus special guest artist Frank Orrall of Thievery Corporation and Poi Dog Pondering. Don Tiki is also honored to bring to the stage special guest artists, legendary SOCAL tiki-shaman Crazy Al, rising Brazillian star Tita Lima and Brazil’s golden tambourine, Carlinhos de Oliveira.

The group has just released their Hot Lava Holiday Songs disc which is available on iTunes and will be for sale on CD at their shows.

Those of us who saw them at Tiki Oasis 10 were knocked out. We are certainly looking forward to seeing the group on their first Los Angeles appearance!

11/7: The 1960s Tucson Sound w/ Manny Freiser on Luxuria!

On my very first episode of Over Under Sideways Down on LuxuriaMusic.com, I featured the legendary Manny Freiser, writer of the ’60s garage nugget “Let’s Talk About Girls,” member of the Grodes and Tongues of Truth as well as a very active producer and writer during Tucson’s bustling local scene in the 1960s. It was my first attempt at live radio as host and engineer and the show proved to be a battleground of train-wrecks. It’s a good thing that not many heard it and that it wasn’t podcasted. Now that the show listener-ship is up by huge percentage points (thanks to all 72 of you) we are going to give it another shot – this Wednesday, 11/7 at 3-5 pm. Tune in for informative banter, radio commercials and a stack of awesome vinyl featuring the 1960s Tucson Sound! If you miss it, we’ll post a podcast on this site shortly after!

Podcast: Doo-Wop Heaven on LuxuriaMusic

For the seventh episode of my ever changing, un-themed / themed LuxuriaMusic.com Internet radio show “Over Under Sideways Down”, I invited my pal, record collector and East-Coast transplant Jay Marshak to the studio with a couple of boxes of Doo-Wop 45s from his incredible rekkid collection. The result was a very entertaining two hours of sweet East Coast harmonies, rock ‘n’ roll, and lots of stories about Jay’s youth in late ‘50s – early ‘60s Brooklyn.  Now I know what “dancing on a dime” means!

CreaturesFest tribute to Mark Smith and Huntington’s Fund-Raiser

CreaturesFest was held on July 21 of this year,  in honor of Mark Smith, the lead singer of the band The Creatures of the Golden Dawn, who passed away from Huntington’s Disease in 2011.

Proceeds from the show which which happened at the North Penn Gun Club in Trumbauersville, PA benefited the PA Chapter of Huntington Disease Society of America.

Gregg Smith kindly wrote a bit about the show to share with those that couldn’t be there

Upon entering the concert room one was confronted with an array of photos of Woody Guthrie and photos of his writings in honor of his 100th birthday. Woody died in 1967 from Huntington’s Disease after spending the last 10 years of his life in hospitals.

In tribute to Guthrie, the show began with two great acoustic duos, Mike McMillan with Laurie Ann Hollinger, and Doug Ashby with Danielle Lubene, performing a sampling of Guthrie’s brilliant songs. Next the new group House of Fire with ex-Creatures of the Golden Dawn Mike Vallone presented a set of scintillating psychedelic with long drones and slow tempos, sounding in part like 1967 era Pink Floyd.

The next group to play, Consolidated Fuzz, are the guys that were in Mark’s last line-up of The Creatures; with JT on vocals and lead guitar. They performed a terrific set which included garage classics like: “It’s The Same All Over The World” and a retro surf instrumental dating back over 25 years to the very first days of The Creatures, They also performed more recent Creatures songs.

Wormwood Scrubs, with former early 90s Creatures lead guitarist Steve Schlack also presented some garage classics such as: “Love Is A Beautiful Thing” by The Young Rascals, “I’m Not Like Everybody Else” by The Kinks, and “Last Time Around” by The Del-Vettes as well as some classic Creatures songs from the 90s. Finally, The Insomniacs from New Jersey, who often played at The Funhouse in Bethlehem, closed out the show with a rousing set of The Jam influenced garage rock.

Of course this was a Memorial for a very sad set of circumstances – CreaturesFest honored the life and tragic loss of Mark Smith, someone who through music, brought joy into the lives of many near and far over the long span of 25 years. Also families from the local Huntington’s Disease Support Group were invited to attend and a clearly afflicted woman and her caretaker husband were seated at the front table. So this was not your standard Saturday night sock hop. In all over 2K was raised and one hopes new breakthroughs in research will soon lead to a cure for this neurological disorder….

There will be another CreaturesFest – to continue in helping raise funds for the Eastern Pennsylvania Chapter of the Huntington’s Disease Society of America, and keep Mark’s spirit alive – this will take place on October 2013.

Gregg Smith – Mark’s brother
