Lauderdale Florida.

The Mai-Kai, now in its 54th year, awaits you with its dimly lit entrance, its cavernous mazes and magical memories! Be dazzled by four days of exotic and intoxicating art, entertainment, music, historic seminars, fashion and of course, drink! Though The Bahia Cabana is sold out, the magnificent Bahia Mar has plenty of rooms (with marina views) available for the incredible rate of $114.00 per night.

The Hukilau has the distinct privilege of presenting the Museum of Art Fort Lauderdale’s Oceanic Collection donated by none other than the Mai-Kai itself in the early 1970s. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to view this world-class collection for the first time.

The Hukilau special guest, artist SHAG, will be debuting three new paintings as part of the on-site Harold Golen Gallery art show installation “Poly Blend.”

The master mixologist, Jeff “Beach Bum” Berry, returns with an all-new seminar about The Suffering Bastard!

Florida historian Lu Vickers, author of “Weeki Wachee, City of Mermaids: A History of One of Florida’s Oldest Roadside Attractions” will delight and enthrall with her seminar, slide show and vintage film footage.

The Hukilau has not one but two film debuts in store for The Hukilau 2010. Filmmaker Jochen Hirschfeld presents the world premiere of “The DVD Of Tiki,” five years in the making – a film crew traveled the Pacific for 101 days capturing both the true South Seas and its pop culture reinvention – a true labor of love. Duda Leite, back from Sao Paulo, Brazil, brings a full feature-length version of his fabulous “Tikimentary: In Search Of The Lost Paradise,” all about the modern-day Tiki movement!!

Our artist pal and fixture in the Downtown Los Angeles (and beyond) art and social scene, Jerico Woggon, is putting on a Cocktail Party, Cocktail Napkin Art Invitational and “Ode to the Lounge Lizard” at the e3rd Steakhouse and Lounge on February 27 featuring Dionysus Records’ DJ Lee and DJ Dan Moses of The Dynotones, a blacklight art installation by Jerico and a VJ. Come join us for a night of music, visuals, booze and good people. Dress to impress!

Jerico Woggon has assembled large-scale installation art at Burning Man and many other events, and will be doing this year’s art installations in the window of Bert Green Fine Art on the corner of 5th and Main. Check out his website at www.cherrymeltdown.com

Jennybird Alcantara “Swooning at the River of Oblivion”

In a mingling of underwater and space realms, Jennybird Alcantara’s “Swooning at the River of Oblivion” depicts characters positioned between the waking world and the world of sleep, and a continued exploration of dual nature, created with oil on wood, acrylic on paper and mixed media dolls. The works are inspired in part by the mythology of Nyx, the primordial goddess of nighttime, Morpheus the Greek god of dreams as well as a quote from a Nick Cave song that reads “You jump into the Abyss to find, it only goes up to your knees”.

Alcantara’s work has at its core a narrative; She explores the complex interconnectedness of opposites as seen through the prism of myth, fable and fantasy using the symbolism of duality to explore the connection of life and death, as well as the relationship between the beauty and cruelness of nature, that of the natural world as well as human and animal nature. The anthropomorphic qualities in her characters show the relationship of the central figure to the world she inhabits. Her inspirations come from a wide variety of sources including fairytales and fables, mythology, the flora and fauna of the natural world and freaks of nature, melancholy and classical music, Victorian customs, folk art, costuming, creepy religious statues and paintings, Symbolism, carnivals, trips down memory lane, broken dolls and objects out of place, as well as all the beautiful and sad things that could not exist one without the other, life and death and the veil in between. Alcantara attended the San Francisco Art Institute where she earned her BFA, and currently lives and works in San Francisco. http://www.jennybirdart.com

George Thomas “The Best Cars Of Our Lives”

George Thomas spent his formative years surrounded by Googie architecture, automobiles with tremendous tailfins, theme parks, advertising and old Hollywood movies  in 1950s-1960s Orange County, California and it reflects in his art. Mixing the real with the surreal, sometimes separately and sometimes in the same piece, Thomas uses oil on canvas to portray a variety of subject matter, from landscapes and floral pictures, cars, mid-century architectural portraits, and iconic allegories, the latter of which are intricate, complex, retro-futuristic and nostalgic. Thomas, a father of three, is a graduate, with honors, from Art Center College of Design in Pasadena and currently lives in the high desert country of the Antelope Valley. www.artbygeorgethomas.com

Dionysus Records’ Lee Joseph guested on Howie Pyro’s “Intoxica” on LuxuriaMusic.com (heard every Tuesday night at 9 pm) on 12/15/09, with a stack of surf, garage and extremely ridiculous 45 RPM records from the ’50s and ’60s. The chatroom was hoppin’ as was the echo and reverb!
