The Mondo Lounge weekend brings to life the music, style and fashion of the Mad Men era at the Palms Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas from October 22nd through 24th.

Mondo Lounge is the Ultimate Retro Party and Conference. The event is themed around the lifestyle and culture of Americana from 1957 to 1963 and will bring together fans of Mid Century Modern architecture, retro fashion, tiki, pin-ups, exotica music, Atomic Age cocktails, bachelor pad living, ballroom dance and the vintage Vegas Rat Pack vibe. There will be plenty of vendors, exhibits, live music and hopefully you!

The in-person host of the weekend is popular fine artist SHAG (aka Josh Agle).  A large selection of his artwork will be a premiere exhibit at the event with an exclusive Friday Night opening also featuring the art of animator David Wiedman (Mr. Magoo, Rocky and Bullwinkle,) Chris Reccardi, Bosco and a ten year anniversary exhibition for “The Book Of Tiki.” Click the link above for a full press release with images.

The entertainment will range from sophisticated jazz combos and vintage fashion shows to Sinatra-styled magic, from dancing girls and DJs to Vargas! (unanimously named the top Las Vegas lounge performers by AOL Citiguide, Las Vegas Life Magazine, and Vegas.com.) Attendees will even be treated to free Ballroom dance classes so they, too can be Dancing with the Stars!

Mondo Lounge rounds out with a Pinup Poolside Party and fun exhibits such as a hands on display of vintage 1950s Playboy Magazines and a vast array of vintage shopping from vendors with ephemera, new and vintage clothes, pop art prints, collectibles, music and more…

Mid Mod Marvels

The Architectural & Decorative Arts Scoiety of Las Vegas (ADAS) and Friends of Classic Las Vegas (FCLV) are pleased to announce a weekend of programming devoted to Las Vegas’ rich heritage of Mid Cenutry Modern architecture and design during the Mondo Lounge weekend. It will include presentations by architectural historian Alan Hess, and architect William Krisel, along with a bus tour of notable mid-century structures and other activities. The public is also invited to the Annual Fall Open House at the Morelli House on October 24, 2010. The Morelli House, built in 1959 by Antonio Morelli, the showroom orchestra conductor at the famous Sands’ Hotel Copa Room – site of Frank Sinatra’s Summit Sessions. Built for $1 million and opened in 1961, the Kahiki was a landmark on E. Broad Street for four decades and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Timeline

1961 | Bill Sapp and Lee Henry open the Kahiki after their Tiki bar, the Grass Shack, burns down.

1988 | After a slew of owners, Michael Tsao buys out his partner and takes over the restaurant.

1995 | Tsao starts a frozen-food company next door to the restaurant.

1997 | The Kahiki is put on the National Register of Historic Places.

April 17, 2000 | Walgreens confirms that it wants to build a store where the Kahiki sits.

June 30, 2000 | Tsao says that he will sell the Kahiki to Walgreens but never reveals how much money it took.

Aug. 25, 2000 | The Kahiki closes its doors before a private farewell party the next day.

July 22, 2005 | Michael Tsao unexpectedly dies 10 weeks after the realization of his dream of moving the company into a bigger factory. The company is in debt and in mourning.

2006 | A group of former Kahiki employees opens a restaurant called Tropical Bistro, but it lasts for only two years.

May 2007 | A Pittsburgh company buys Kahiki for $11.7 million, although the factory stays in Gahanna.

2010 | The company makes almost $50 million in sales a year and sells 70 products in groceries across the country. President Alan Hoover said it still makes many of the dishes from the Kahiki menu.

Last Thursday a few people migrated to El Chavo on the Los Feliz / Silver Lake border after Lina Lecaro’s “Los Angeles’s Best Dive Bars” book signing at La Luz de Jesus Gallery. On the way back to my car, parked on Sunset near the gallery, I was waiting for the light at Hillhurst to turn green when I looked in the window of a vacuum cleaner store next to the Good Luck Bar – a sparkly gold vacuum cleaner in the window caught my eye and upon further examination I noticed the machine’s  “Privilege” logo (interesting name for a vacuum cleaner) looked really familiar. Have a look for yourself. The Royal company should give Dionysus Records a vacuum!

Dionysus Records logo by Dave Stuckey was originally designed for the Big Sandy “Don’t Desert Me” single released way back when. This logo design has, and continues to appear on almost every Dionysus release since.

In 2004, The Dollyrots first album “Eat My Heart Out” was released as a vinyl LP on Dionysus Records and CD on Lookout / Panic Button Records.  Shortly after the album’s release, both versions  sold out.  This week, Dionysus Records in conjunction with The Dollyrots have pressed up 500 copies of “Eat My Heart Out” on blue and white opaque vinyl with a download coupon which includes the entire album plus three bonus B sides, just in time for their tour supporting The Buzzcocks. Some of the pressing will be sold on tour, some will go into distribution and a few will be sold via Dionysus Mail-Order.

The Dollyrots are inspired by the early ’60s Brill Building song-writers and the related girl-group sound of the same era, with the attitude and attack of The Ramones. Their current albums are on Joan Jett’s Blackheart Records.

The Story :
Originally the blues “Crossroads” was a literal right-angle crossing of two railroads – “where the Southern cross the Dog” – in Moorhead, Mississippi. The “Southern” was a line of the Southern Railway, sold to the Columbus and Greenville Railway in 1920, and the “Dog” was the “Yellow Dog”, officially the Yazoo and Delta Railroad, part of the Illinois Central Railroad system after 1897. This place is mentioned in a number of blues, including the recorded works of W. C. Handy and Bessie Smith. There songs were influenced by The king of the Delta Slide Guitar Robert Johnson who tells a story in his song “Cross Road Blues” about going down to the Crossroads and selling his soul to the devil to learn how to play guitar.

In Honor of Community Spirit – Carrying the Arts Torch we Remember :
Joel Bloom, who owned and operated Bloom’s General Store since 1994 in the Arts District of Los Angeles, was one of the forces responsible for bringing the Arts District much needed recognition. A sampling of his numerous achievements included bringing the community a bus route, 30 street lights, 75 trees, plus being active in the naming of the area known now known as the Arts District.

On July 3, the Los Angeles City Council honored Bloom by officially approving the Motion to rename Third and Traction in Downtown Los Angeles Joel Bloom Square.

“Blitzkrieg Bop,” “Rockaway Beach,” “I Wanna Be Sedated,” “Sheena is a Punk Rocker,” “Rock ‘n’ Roll High School.” With humor spiked lyrics, a shockingly unique delivery, and backed by the fast, frenetic music of his band, Joey Ramone gave voice to the disaffected youth of the seventies and eighties while defining punk rock in America.  I SLEPT WITH JOEY RAMONE: A Family Memoir (Touchstone, an imprint of Simon & Schuster; December 1, 2009; Hardcover/$26; 978-0-7432-5216-4) is the story of the turbulent life of one of America’s greatest rock icons, revealed for the first time by Joey Ramone’s brother, Mickey Leigh, with “Resident Punk” Legs McNeil.

Mickey tells his fascinating, though sometimes troubling, tale of growing up with a rock star with honesty, humor, and grace.  Before Joey Ramone’s signature sunglasses, face obscured by a mop of hair, and towering height became the personification of punk’s early image, he was simply Jeffry Hyman, born on May 19, 1951 in Forest Hills, New York.  Rock ‘n’ roll gave the lanky, awkward teen a sanity-saving outlet for his anti-social behaviors—which included the crippling Obsessive Compulsive Disorder that plagued him throughout his life.

In 1974 Jeff co-founded the Ramones with friends John Cummings and Douglas Colvin.  “Joey,” “Johnny,” “Tommy” and “Dee Dee Ramone” were soon regulars at CBGB’s, honing the brief, rapid-fire concert style that would soon become the stuff of legend.  The Ramones’ 1976 debut album, replete with hooky, three-chord songwriting, cheerfully dumb humor, and boundless energy, heralded the true birth of punk rock and created the blueprint that countless bands would follow to the top of the charts.

Despite their enormous musical and cultural influence, a career spanning two decades, and a handful of undisputedly classic albums, the uppermost levels of fame were always just out of reach for the Ramones.  The infighting, romantic betrayals, and addictions that tormented the band also strained personal relationships along the way.  As these pressures peaked, Mickey saw them take their toll on the kind, caring boy he once shared his bedroom with in Queens, who began to periodically display an uncharacteristically malicious persona. After forty years of extreme closeness, the two brothers engaged in a conflict that had them pushing and pulling at each other throughout much of the 1990’s, though, in the end it was Mickey who was again closest with his brother during Joey’s battle with lymphatic cancer that ultimately ended his life in 2001.

To ensure the story was balanced, complete, and told fairly, Mickey and Legs interviewed dozens of family, friends, colleagues, and industry professionals who were there as Joey’s life unfolded.  Both a tribute to the rise of punk in America and an intimate look at a journey filled with music and challenges, I SLEPT WITH JOEY RAMONE is an enduring portrait of a man who struggled to find his voice and of the brother who loved him.

ABOUT THE AUTHORS

MICKEY LEIGH has been an influential player in the rock & roll world since the late seventies.  After forming Birdland with Lester Bangs in 1977 he became the lead singer/guitarist/songwriter for the Rattlers and Stop and was a contributor to the music of the Ramones.  He has written the monthly column My Guitar is Pregnant for the Lower East Side-based newspaper the New York Waste since 1996; created and published the Coney Island High Times, a monthly magazine for famed rock club Coney Island High; and written reviews for magazines including Audio Review and Time Out New York.  This is his first book.  He lives in New York City.

LEGS MCNEIL is the coauthor of Please Kill Me: The Uncensored Oral History of Punk, a book widely hailed as the definitive work on the subject.  The cofounder of the seminal magazine that gave punk its name, he is a former editor at Spin and editor in chief of Nerve.  He divides his time between New York City and his home in Schwenksville, Pennsylvania.
