This Tuesday at 9pm Pacific, tune in to Howie Pyro’s “Intoxica” Radio on LuxiuraMusic for an evening of 45 RPM insanity featuring  ‘60s garage, surf, psych, retarded lounge losers, crazy Asian a go-go, rockabilly, monster music, psycho soul, freaky funk, soundtracks, not-so-psychedelic songs about LSD, voodoo R&B, girl-groups and other world nonsense. This week’s special guest Lee Joseph from Dionysus Records will be joining Howie with a random stack of killer wax and banter with the host and chat room!

The Yardbirds “Happenings Ten Years Time Ago” is,  in my opinion, their finest moment (though “Shapes Of Things” and “Think About It” come pretty close.)  The track features the group’s signature minor key melody and Gregorian-like harmonies, pitted against one MF of a riff – with both Jimmy Page and Jeff Beck on guitars along with John Paul Jones on bass.

That riff inspired numerous cool songs, among them “Children of the Sun” by Riverside CA / London UK transplants The Misunderstood, “Son Of Fantasy” and “Son Of Fantasy II” by Los Angeles hardpsych rockers The Hook (featuring former Leaves member Bobby Arlin) and the teeth-gnashing “I’m Sick Of You” by James Williamson era Iggy and The Stooges.

Like the old saying “digging a hole to China.” insatiable record collectors go through stages, digging deeper & deeper to find the next unknown treasure. Collectors of garage/trash 50’s & 60’s oddities have grown in recent years like a wild fungus & many vinyl mysteries have been solved only to open new ones. Looking to the east we have indeed literally dug a hole to a 60’s Singapore & Malaysian weirdsville, represented here by a family style nightmare of rickshaw crashing left of center wild rockers that would never make it onto even a collectors compilation of this sort. “Azalia Snail has been making her uniquely sweet, viscous, noise-inflected, tempo-bending psychedelia for almost two decades, recording a dozen or so albums between 1990 and 2006 on labels including Funky Mushroom and Dark Beloved Cloud.  She’s back with a disc on Silver Lake’s experimental True Classical Records, a dense haze of swooning vocals and seething synths cut by abrasive swaths of indie guitar mayhem. The music has its share of discordant moments and harsh textures, but somehow these are enveloped in a softening sheen; as Snail sings in the opening track, it is “Heavy mental/ Honeysuckle gentle.”

“Azalia Snail appeared on the stage.  Right away at the beginning one felt that the audience would be given a special performance, even if only for four songs. While building a pedestal with a silver cover, over which she put her little white synthesizer, this feeling was only further strengthened.  Azalia Snail, who was formerly known as the “Queen of lo-fi,” did not actually need to do very much to place the audience under her spell.  Already the first song, Golden Slumbers, fascinated with the typical mix of Azalia Snail church organ and psychedelic indie sounds.”
