11/4: Dionysus Records presents a night at The Redwood Bar and Grill

Orchestra Superstring features DJ Bonebrake of X on vibes and plays instrumental jazz music inspired by Afro-Cuban, Latin, and other modern influences. Composed of an eclectic band of well known Los Angeles musicians; Orchestra Supersting blends infectious beats and fresh rhythms in original tunes written by its members, and creates new interpretations of jazz standards. Their second album, “Easy,” will be released by Dionysus Records in February of 2011.

The Dick and Jane Family Orchestra featuring Jane Cantillon, Richard Ross, percussionist Mike Peffer (also of Biblical Proof of UFOs) and Dionysus Records’ Lee Joseph on bass plays a hybrid of folk, beat and garage – acoustifying Velvet Underground, feminizing Bob Dylan and featuring frontwoman Cantillon’s extremely infectious and humorous LA-centric originals.

The Skip Heller Trio features long  time Dionysus Records recording artist and friend Skip Heller with Lee Joseph on bass and guest drummer DJ Bonebrake. The trio plays an all-acoustic country, roots and rock ‘n’ roll set showcasing Heller’s songsmithing, vocals and  jazz, country and rockabilly inspired guitar playing.

The night starts at 9:30 and the cover is only $5.00. If you’ve never been to the pirate themed Redwood Bar and Grill, come early and hungry. They have some of the best comfort food, salads and sweet potato fries in Los Angeles!

THE DICK AND JANE FAMILY ORCHESTRA
Featuring buxom high priestess of splendor, one of LA’s first 100 punks, Miss Jane Cantillon and her husband Richard Ross’ memorable audience participation provoking LA-centric original compositions,  The Dick and Jane Family Orchestra also perform favorites by Dylan and Leonard Cohen along with acoustified Jaynettes, Jimi Hendrix and Captain Beefheart songs. Dionysus Records’ Lee Joseph plays bass and Michael Peffer, formerly with Cleveland’s Biblical Proof of UFOs plays percussion.

RUTHANN FRIEDMAN
Ruthann Friedman is an enduring gem, a jewel in the headband of 60s culture. With a serious clutch of songs, she defines an exact space and time. Her smooth and undulating vocal line is combined with polished stone-washed lyrical poetry. Her legend starts with “Windy”– The Association took it on and pushed it to the top of the charts in 1967.  A former housemate of David Crosby and the Jefferson Airplane, her jazz-touched, melodically complex songs go beyond mere hippie confessions.

AZALIA SNAIL
Azalia Snail has been making her uniquely sweet, viscous, noise-inflected, tempo-bending psychedelia for over two decades, recording a dozen or so albums between 1990 and 2010 on labels including Dark Beloved Cloud and Powertool Records. The music has its share of discordant moments and harsh textures, but somehow these are enveloped in a softening sheen. She has toured the USA, Europe, Japan, and New Zealand.  She has jammed with Beck, The Black Heart Procession, The Grifters, Trumans Water, Low, and many other unique musical artists. Joining Azalia for this show will be sax player Emily St Amand Poliakoff.

Troy Walker

Messaround thrill wrangler Jonny Whiteside joyously welcomes back Troy Walker, the hyper-flamboyant, ultra-talented song stylist whose wicked humor, show-stopping presentation and gale-force lungpower first immolated Sunset Strip lounge lizards almost fifty years ago. Walker’s passion, involvement and flawless execution are as indisputably arresting as ever, still soaring to the out-of-this-world level that won him such fans as Elvis Presley, Louella Parsons, Ethel Merman, Mae West and Ronald Reagan. A historic, albeit inadvertent, pre-Stonewall symbol of Way Out queer equality, Walker’s take no prisoners candor drove him to include a smoldering version of “Happiness is a Thing Called Joe” on his prized Live at the Crescendo LP and later–against all odds– allowed him to become a beloved 1970’s fixture at redneck C&W shrine the Palomino. Walker’s phrasing, repertoire and gift as an arranger always set him apart and led to alliances with distinguished players like Country-rock godfather Leon Russell (who bestowed Joe Cocker with a major hit via Troy’s kicking arrangement of “Cry Me a River”) and an eight year collaboration with Hollywood studio guitar titan Jerry Cole. Making only his second appearance in more than a decade, expect nothing less than a high-voltage dose of cut-above country, soul and rock & roll kicks from this most boss, one of a kind entertainer.

The Dick and Jane Family Orchestra

Preceding Walker will be a set from Tinsel Town underworld artist-filmmaker-empress Jane Cantillon’s Dick & Jane, a deliciously pop-centric exercise in real-now, old school oddball that’s laid waste to audiences everywhere from the Cinegrill to NYC’s Limelight. Teamed with sweet strumming spouse Richard Ross, indefatigable rock head (and Dionysus Records prexy) Lee Joseph on bass and percussionist Michael Peffer (late of Biblical Proof of UFOs), Dick & Jane’s mixture of offbeat charm and expectation defying creativity perfectly fit the

Messaround’s radically high standard for all-the-way-down low life merrymaking. Ditto for the

The Groovy Rednecks

Groovy Rednecks, hard-charging honky-tonk hell-raisers whose near two decades of mayhem and wig flipping have earned them both the affection of a hardcore cult following and a tattered mantle of disprespect from squares throughout Southern California. While titles like “How Come I Only Love You When I’m Drunk?”, “Drinkin’ Band” and “Buzzed” speak to the group’s drastic capabilities, their songs are more painstakingly crafted country gems then painfully corny genre conjuring. That’s a hell of a balancing act, but even with all that beer in ’em, these mavericks always pull it off with eerie grace.

The proceedings will ignite with the Messaround Tabernacle Choir, featuring funkenized, rocky-tonk guitar hero Harry Orlove, soulful, sinuous bassist Paul Marshall (formerly with the Strawberry Alarm Clock and the only man in the business who has worked with Russ Meyer and Rose Maddox) and deadly accurate drummer David Raven, who will play their own opening set and accompany Walker (not to mention the inevitable drop-in guest stars).

Bohemians, Lofts and Downtown Los Angeles
This night honors “The Beat Generation,” who defined freedom of expression on so many levels. Taking themselves to higher states of conciseness using simple tools such as the American road, a glass of wine, caffeine and a typewriter; the new bohemians of their time broke ground for us. The typewriter is now a keyboard, but the beat still goes on — we are in the same circus with a different set of clowns. Since 1978, the artists of our time have come to Downtown Los Angeles with that same pioneer spirit, following the “low rent” dream. This is the artist family tree, growing and sinking its creative roots into the soil of Downtown Los Angeles. We gather to celebrate the Bohemian lifestyle in our Year of 2010 with an event that has its roots in 1940’s. This is rise of the Renaissance of Downtown Los Angeles that is at the core root about artists living the dream. Come celebrate this special time of magic centered in the “Last Great American City.” We are the Lost Angels, we have the Beat. This is an Event to Honor the Beat Generation of the 1940s, 1950s and early 1960s “Beatniks.” The Torch has been passed, and we keep it burning!

Many words about the Bohemian culture describe what is happening now in Downtown LA. The Artists are moving to Downtown LA in numbers, just like SOHO in the past. Soho was a manufacturing zone transformed into an artist in residence situation, coining the term “LOFT” in historic manufacturing buildings. At the time, artists illegally lived in these large lofts, ignoring the zoning violations, and making use of the abandon and dormant space as a result of the bad economy in New York City. This is our situation here in DTLA now. The term “Bohemian” as related to Bohemianism – i.e. describing the nontraditional lifestyles of marginalized and impoverished artists, writers, musicians, and actors in major European cities – emerged in France in the early 19th century when artists and creators began to concentrate in the lower-rent, lower class gypsy neighborhoods.
